I purchased new Lucas sla 13ah batteries when I got my bike last month as I thought it might perform better with new batteries but it doesn't, I weigh 12st 8lbs and basically any type of small hills is killing my battery life and pedalling alot more than I would sometimes like. (Pretty physical job is leaving me tired) My journey to work is a 16 mile round trip, mixture of some hills and flat. I recharge bike at work for journey home too. I see their is a battery upgrade to lithium but that seems quite expensive and i don't know what improvement that will give me. I'm crap at understand amps mah etc

Is something like this goin to improve performance?

Rechargeable Batteries & Battery Chargers - 36V 4200mAh NiMH Battery Pack for E-Bike and Scooter

Hi After many years supplying lead acid battery's we imported battery's from Ritar

They are the ONLY battery's for EV Electric Vehicles you need The Blue top ones all the other types are made for UPS computer backups

I would try a set off these we used 4 X on our 48 volt 1,000 watt motors and range wise 12 miles no problems

Ritar RT12120EV 12v 12ah - EV series battery - Perfect cell for mobility scooter | eBay

Ritar : Products

As you can see on there site the make 7 different types the all look the same

Sounds like those Lucas batteries weren't up to the job, you do need the right deep discharge types as Frank says. That NiMh solution is unlikely to help and would require a new charger anyway.
