Policing by consent is voluntary as long as generally most abide by the advice given, there are exemptions to be out and about but not in groups, if the masses go against it then enforcement will happen. The army would be on stand by to help if it were ever to come to it, to help the police out.
The current situation is unprecedented to all of us in peace time and in the main the sheeple as SW call them are abiding or obeying the rules. To an extent I am but still go out between two - four times a day for work, caring, shopping, exercise and tending livestock.

I gave up listening to the radio years ago. I never watch the TV news, in fact I rarely watch TV now. I gave up reading any newspapers after the last election, so that's about four months I've managed. Don't be afraid to think for yourself, or question what is being put out by the mainstream media. In Victoria Wood's Dinnerladies, she had a character who used to say 'It said in the Daily Mail'. I worked for twenty years with a lady who used to come back from lunch and say 'It said in the paper'. These press barons have their own agenda, and just want to sway your mind. They are not actually worried about YOU! I used to read The Canary, which comes at things a different way, and it made me think. People who try to justify keeping the BBC come out with the mantra 'It's trusted by people all over the world'. Well, more fool them. All of the media has been used by those in power, whether during a wartime situation to deliberately mislead, or helping the police in their work to mislead criminals. Just THINK for your self. That's why Soundwave refers to Sheeples - those who blindly follow.

If we are policed by consent what stops you from saying I don’t consent?
Nothing at all, and that is it's strength.

It means the only thing the police can do win our consent is to apply the commonsense and tolerance that allows us to readily agree.

And as you can see in the current times, the public have a lot to say. Apparently that 'notorious' drone footage was a result of complaints from the public.
People regularly complain to the Police about others not complying with the new regulations.

Just this minute on TV one of the government saying on her way to the conference she passed a big group of cyclists. I'm just back a 2 hour solo ride and also saw two guys in all the road bike regalia side by side chatting.

Earlier on two police officers in Edinburgh's "Meadows" park walked about 400 yards over to a guy completely on his own with a wee girl toddler. There was a small ball on the ground. The police dispersed them. I'd have told the cops where to go.

Crazy times

I have no objections to the police using a drone to detect groups being stupidly antisocial, indeed they should do.

What was wrong was posting it publically online, including criticism of innocent people alone, simply for them being out in the countryside.

There is an element of moral panic in these actions. Just like the spy scares at the start of both World Wars.

The politicians keep saying 'police by consent' What does this mean that's why I asked the question in the initial posting.
If they police by consent there is a possible problem with people saying I don't consent to your rules surely?

The rules are not by consent, only the policing.

In other words, the police should open all contact with courtesy and respect to gain the agreement of a person to co-operate. Then if they don't co-operate, seek to persuade them. Finally if that doesn't work, then but only then may force be used, but only sufficient force to do what is necessary.

This works so well almost all the time that our police uniquely do not need to carry guns in most circumstances.

We did unwisely relapse into a period around the 1980s when all officers could be given guns where necessary and all had access to training ranges. Fortunately that was changed to our present system where only selected better trained officers, usually in specialist squads, are allowed to carry arms.

Thus the great majority of police officers continue to police by consent.

Behind this is the Peel principle number 7 which makes the police and ourselves the same:

"To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police, the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence."

this can be that they live in the same house. My son gets shouted at frequently as he lives in a shared house. People look at a couple or three young chaps close and chatting while cycling/running jump to the conclusion that they are breaking the rules.

She could be onto something. I live alongside Biggin Hill Airport and under the Heathrow stack with Gatwick traffic also passing. Below is photo of all the red and black sky trails at sunset:

Actually last Easter was the hottest on record so this year is nothing special.

Except this year everyone gets to enjoy the sunshine at home, instead of tens of thousands being in swelteringly hot cars, stuck in endless traffic queues and wondering when they'll ever get to reach the sea side. ;)
Good point, I was stuck in hospital last year after a heart attack so being stuck in the garden feels a complete luxury as the thought of even going near a hospital at this time fills me with fear.

Well nothing stops one saying what one wants to say..
It's more a question of actions and potential outcomes..
Generally it's not a good idea to peeve them off, if they have a chat, likely best chat, and comply, then continue your day elsewhere..
They are folk employed with orders themselves, I disagree with the drone use in Britain, fact is most governments (who are expert at enforcing their will in the midst of unexpected circumstances..) will be rubbing their hands together at the opportunity to flex their authoritarian muscles..
Fact is Any smart fone can have its mike switched on by any modern government, or individual in the know (few folk)
All these alexa siri etc apps/gadgets could be listening all day long..
Any smart fone reveals its location all day every day.
Mainstream Media (msm) cannot be trusted at all, indeed it was msm journalists who persuaded the Govt to strict measures..
Lastly, it emerges today the U. S. has subsidised £3 million research, in Wuhan, over the last Ten Years, into....... Corona virus
Also their are two massive virus research labs there...
Got to be a connection..
