Nowadays, I never see a Police Officer on a bike, although it was quite common years ago.
Would it help our cause if Police, CSO's, Traffic Wardens were all issued with and required to use bikes?
I imagine the feedback from official sources regarding the inadequacy of our cycling infrastructure might just concentrate some minds.

I'm sure that most of the cops that I know would be delighted to be issued with a bike and even more delighted if they were told that they must use it to get around. It would also be a fair bet that the public are under the misapprehension that they would like to see bobbies on bikes. That is until they want a copper themselves and the nearest one is 10 miles away and travelling to their assistance on a bicycle.

A nice idea for the bobbies, but I think the public would be whining after no time at all.

We have Community Police in Hampshire, on bikes. I'm not sure about full-time police though. Jimmy Edwards in It's Your Move makes me laugh. I've never managed to scoot along on a bike like that.

Wouldn`t work Mike as they would keep getting stolen every time they were at a crime scene . Remember the Motorcyclist that was knocked from his machine recently ? Someone `helpfully`picked it up for him and promptly rode off on it .

Quite a few in Blackpool - regularly passed a couple of Bobbies on their bikes when I used to ride to work.

Never spoken to them - they've never managed to catch me!

City centres often use them, we have them in the West End and City of London. The West End officers boast about catching many drivers on mobile phones, since they are able to get through the traffic congestion and reach an offending driver in a way car mounted officers can't.

Seen them on bikes in Devon - Kingsbridge to be precise. Not going anywhere fast though with those hills ;)

Durham Police has a few mountain bikes, and I've seen bike riding officers in neighbouring Northumbria.

I think they tend to be deployed at public events, shows and the like.

Does anyone remember a song recorded by Roger Miller back in the 60s called England Swings?

The opening lines, which involved a degree of poetic license, were;

England swings like a pendulum do
Bobbies on bicycles two by two...

They don`t write em like that anymore...

Westminster Abbey, the tower Big Ben,
The smiling faces of the little children.

Awful tosh!

I think you may have to have a quick word with Robert Peel.
