Hi,
Well I adjusted the gearson the Agattu, turning the bike upside down and aligning the two yellow spots.. (why couldn't they put them somewhere more convenient??). The gears sit perfectly well with no crunching. However, when I am climbing up steep hills with the power on, the rattling and clicking returns and still sounds a sthough the gear is not quite engaged even though it no longer slips. I thought I'd try the forum with this as Lloyd must be getting fed up with my emails about this that or the other.

Is the chain fairly tight or very slack. This might be a cause if the chain has stretched. Just come back from 35k ride and noticed my chain is very loose. there was more noise than usual and it was slipping when I put some real effort in on the hills. I think the peeps who did my gear mod may have forgotten to shorten the chain.

I have been having exactly the same problem. When I replaced the 22 tooth sprocket I took out some of the chain, but am not sure if I took out enough. I think I only took out a chain link (which is one inch) but I think 2 inches will need to come out (from 22 tooth to 18 tooth). However that has not been causing the jumping gears (and in one case the chain falling off). This was caused by the chain tensioner next to the motor sprocket. This was very stiff and gradually lifting up (and sticking) on a journey until the chain is under no tension at all. I loosened the tensioner fixing screw, oiled and re-tightened. The tensioner now moves freely up and down and does a better job of tensioning. I think the tensioner will improve with running in provided it is well oiled when you do the chain.

Musicbooks - you should be able to see the yellow marks when you look down at the back of the gears, you don't need to turn it over. Well that is how it is on mine.

Aligning gears on Agattu (Shimano Nexus 7 only)

Hi Musicbooks:

Dealing with the gears only (I don't have an Agattu so cannot give any advice re the chain):
1. It is necessary to engage the fourth gear (shown on the handlebar selector).
2. It is NOT necessary to turn the bike over - the yellow marks can be seen from above, but you may have to manoeuvre you vision to pick them up. They may need a 'wee' clean to reveal them at their best.

Perhaps on a more interesting note you could have been supplied with a 'pamphlet' on the subject of Shimano Nexus Hubs by 50 Cycles. Indeed, at one time in the recent past they had an information page(s) on their web site with all this useful information on. Alternatively, you could look up the Shimano website and chose "European" and there is a legion of useful (nay, vital) information there.
best of luck
Peter
