Anyone have any experience with this company? They seem to be popular and well reviewed on Aliexpress, but I don't give the Ali review system much credence and I can find almost no chatter about them on ebike forums.

Linky: Passion ebikes kit I'm interested in

Spec wise, I'm (reasonably) settled on a 48v 1000-1500w rear direct drive hub motor kit and the budget's around the £300 without battery. Any recommendations for decent quality kits or motor brands? How are the generic Chinese kits on ebay/ali?

I'm itching to ditch my car right now. o_O

Thanks

It's a standard generic kit as. you say, they mostly are of course

Aliexpress etc you run the risk of zero backup or realistic prospect of return if anything goes wrong. You pays yer money and crosses yer fingers. Usually you'll be fine

However, why such a huge motor ? Obviously illegal at this wattage but I'm not judging

I ask as it's likey to be serious overkill for any sensible requirements

Overkill isn't an issue in itself but you will absolutely eat battery Ah. As you have chosen a 48v system as.opposed to a more standard 36v you need fifty percent extra cells inside the pack for the same ah (e.g. 10ah 36v pack vs 10ah 48v pack)

So your battery is heavier and more epensive . You then couple it to that massive motor and you have a low range

Personally, if determined to be illegal then I'd go for a 500w BPM motor at 36v

It's more than enough speed and torque. (And probably peaks at 1500w anyway)

You will also have a decent range and keep battery costs down

And you'd be buying a solid , Chinese , tried and tested motor

You don't mention your usage so be aware those D/D hubs are heavy about 6kg and wound for fast speed usually about 470/490 rpm so will be poor hill climbers. If the battery runs out forget pedalling it as the hub is not geared. Don't forget you may have to pay import/vat duties from Ali, if it is handled by DHL then you won't.
Woosh sell kits with battery and back up for about £500ish so a better option then Ali or ebay. My Big bear BPM kit is powerful with great torque, done 1650 miles only fault has been side plate bearing wore so I replaced it for < £2. 19/20mph @36v and a bit more @48v.
Oxydrive kits are v. good my cst kit has been faultless now over 2k miles. Currently front drive kits @499 and rear drive @599 inc very good Samsung celled 13ah battery my one gets me 45-50 miles.

Yay, thanks for the replies :)

Ok, I'm a bit of a 'petrol head' traditionally, but I'm ditching my car and motorcycle as I bike 95% of my journeys anyway. I cant justify the running cost of petrol powered vehicles anymore.

I like speed, but perhaps I am being a bit overzealous in my pursuit of it, I'd like to cruise at a bare minimum of 30mph, practicality is sort of important but not my primary concern (my commute is only 5 mins on my hybrid), I'd like a kit that can make my pleasure rides more accessible, they're mostly sub 20 miles round trip on roads and paths, on rare occasions I go up to 40miles round, but I often feel too worn out to do them after work.

I live in a flat (but fairly windy) area, I'm 162lbs/73kg and very fit, I intend to keep pedaling, just not as much on my work days. I have a MTB I'm keeping human powered so I can use that when I want to pedal, otherwise I'd have gone straight for a geared motor, I still like the idea of geared but I'm concerned that they offer poorer range and top speed at a higher price... am I wrong in thinking that?

Battery wise I was thinking of a 20ah 48v frame battery (with a 1500w motor), I really don't like the cost of them but I can stretch to it, cheaper than petrol in the long run. I'm a bit of a penny pincher so I can also appreciate the smaller motor/battery combo and I'm still tempted by it.

I guess I'm struggling to match reliable brands and the various specs to my usage requirements, thanks for helping me with that ;) I was kind of ready to impulse buy the passion ebikes kit in the alibaba sale but I think I need to think/talk things out a bit more.

Cheers guys

I've fitted one of those kits. It had everything the same except the controller was 25 amps instead of 45 amps.

Apart from the motor wheel being so heavy, it wasn't bad. It was very quiet and on levels 1 and 2, it was very similar to a normal ebike, but it could go quite fast when you turned up the power further. It was very smooth, but didn't have as much torque as a 500w Bafang BPM or CST. These kits are very good for sustained high speed use, but not as good as the 500w geared motors for stop-start riding or hills, where they become inefficient and waste a lot of battery.

Maximum speed depends on how much current you allow. 45 amps will go about 40 mph, but you need a very good battery for that, like the triangle ones that Em3ev.com or Luna sell. I wouldn't use an Aliexpress battery for that. Most people use a 25A controller, so that you can use a standard dolphin battery.

With the 45 amp controller, hill-climbing would be as good as or better than a 500w geared motor.

I've bought controllers from Passion Ebike Store. Don't forget about the duty and handling charge. You can get the 25 amp kit from Electric Bike Conversions.
