Hi All
Long story about electric bike, bought a currie izip 24v pas electric bike for a song and was very happy with it, not great on the hills but for a regular commute back and forward to work with a milage of 5mls there and back with no great hills it was great,it would take you on the flat at 15mph,and i was realy enjoying it,had the bike for about 9 months and the bottom bracket started tightening up,silly me thought the bottom bracket bearings had blown and needed replacing.first big problem, had the crank set remover, inserted on the drive side to remove crank and stripped thread. Made from alluminiam like chewing gum.HEY HO hammer and cold chizel, oops damaged pas sensor, eventually got it of,all that had been the problem was the lock nut had tightened up and needeed adjusted bo ho.
During this dismantle i had damaged the pas sensor and the chain ring.OK chain ring not a problem 42t ring easely got from ebay, but the pas sensor has been a nightmare,in the course of trying to find one, you would not believe the problems i have encountered, first stop was currie technologies USA no support in UK.PAS sensor out of stock and if it was available it would cost 9$ plus postage at a price of approx 26£.OK that was dissmised plenty on ebay.First problem had to find out if controller was analog or digital don,t have a clue, next problem, was it + or +-,i started to get lost at that point.God i can not believe it would be so hard to get a spare part for a bike that is selling on ebay and amazon, and olso is selling well, the poeple who are buying this bike are in for a shock because there is no support for spare parts,it is a shame because it is a good electric bike, well made as far as i can see.Anyway is there anybody on this site, that states, everything you need to know about electric bikes and i don,t want to here about, should have bought a kalkof at 2grand,can anyone help a person who can only afford a basic electric bike
thanks

If you can afford it, it's worth replacing the bottom bracket with a cartridge type. The replacement parts for the other type never seem to work. You can get a cartridge one at Halfords for about £10. Just get one the same length as your old one. You can take the old spindle along to compare. You can normally screw them in without special tools, but you'll probably need the tool to get it out again if you ever need to.

No need to panic about the sensor yet. There's probably loads of alternatives once we have a bit more info. I'm sure there's a simple solution. What's actually damaged - any chance of a photo? How many magnets in the disk- 5 or 10? In the meantime you might be able to test the magnets with another one. Using a small fridge magnet or similar chech each magnet on the disk to see if it attracts or repels to get the pattern. Some are all the same way and some alternate N-S. If it's a 5 magnet disk, they'll be all the same way, but I think the 10 magnet ones alternate.

Hi All
Thanks for the replies it has been a great help don,t know if i have attached picture correctly.Have been in touch with shop in notts that someone suggested and they have been very helpfull, but they have warned me that support for this bike is dwindeling albeit that they still sell the bike,he is going to look at bike in salesroom and try to identify the pas sensor. The ones that have been sent to me are 5 magnets and the one i need seems to be 10.the magnets seem not to be in line it seems there are 5 on outer and 5 on inner radias.if the pictures turn out you will see what i mean.
Thanks

You didn't answer the question. What's broken about it?

Different PAS have different hall sensors in. The common 5 magnet ones switch high with 5V each time a magnet passes -- like they're on a spring pulled up and then spring back. Other halls stay where they're put, so you need a N magnet to pull them up and a S magnet to push them back down. The end result is nearly the same: 5 x 5V pulses for each pedal rotation. The controller checks the pulses and switches on the motor when they come at a high enough rate. I therefore believe that either type of PAS will work, but you need both parts - the sensor and the disk. Answer the above question and then I'll see about lending you one of the 5 magnet type to try.

pictures of pas sensor fo izip skyline bike

Hi All
Pictures of bike and mangled sensor.IMG_20120908_145039.jpgIMG_20120908_145055.jpgI did not pay attention when magnate disintegrated and don,t know if there were magnates in every square as you can see there are holes on 2 radias an outer one at the max of the radias and another slightly more back from the max of the radias. Thanks to b8veh for his support, the sensor is still intact it is only the magnates that are mangled.i have a 5 magnate disc which i origanaly ordered only to find it did not work,i used the new magnate with the old sensor which may have been a mistake.

You made a good job of that. I see what you mean.

Send me your address by Personal Message and I'll send you both parts of a 5 magnet one to try. If it doesn't work, you can send it back. I think it's well worth a try - I think about 80% chance of it working.

I guess with the excitement of getting his bike going again, Mellingford has forgotten to post the results. i had a message from him to say that the 5 magnet sensor from BMSBattery did work. He had tried another one that didn't, but he probably didn't know that they only work one way. For anybody else that needs a new sensor, you have to try the magnet disk both ways round to see which way works. Also, you have to flip the magnet disk if you want to change the sensor to the other side of the BB.
