Panasonic 36v Middle Motor questions

Hi All:
Does any one know the difference between the R2 and L2 versions of the 36v Panasonic Middle Motors? Both R2 and L2 appear to be available in both coaster brake and freewheel versions. These are the ones from around 2012-2013. Not the "Next Generation" ones that came out around 2014. They appear the same on the outside when comparing like braking systems. Same part numbers too from what I can tell.

Is it possible that it is just color? Judging from the pictures on eBay it appears that the R2 is lighter silver and the L2 is grayer. Thats just a couple of examples and seems unlikely.
