it wont explode im afraid it is a discharge test to see what the capacity is 5 years later from 3400mah from new.
With laptop batteries not charged for 5 years, the prognosis is poor - I usually throw them away. That being said, I've got an extremely rare battery for a very old laptop which I might try replacing the cells of. Otherwise new batteries for it are £135 plus duty etc. Bloody Sony!

I could do with a cheap but effective soldering gadget for the cells. At least the cells should be easy to source.

stock is low everywhere and prices are rising on everything!
The cells in the Sony laptop battery pack are small and slim, haven't opened it up yet - I have a second battery pack which I might be able to salvage good cells from, but that has never been charged because the seller sent me the wrong version... but I was refunded. Cells should be similar if not the same, whatever they are - they look likely AAA sized li-ions of some sort. I'll open the packs up to see.

I'm not spending this much on a new one, that's for sure:

The very slim pack did manage to power it for about 2 hours when new, barely manages 45 minutes now. I've got a much higher capacity version too which works great, I charge it every six months, lasts over 4 hours with laptop going full pelt, 8 hours browsing or running office apps, and that pack definitely contains 18650 cells. I'll find out what those mysterious AAA sized liion cells are...

well good luck getting to the cells most of the time it is a cell salvage mission as most of the time you destroy the batt getting the cells out. and done on purpose!

id do that first b4 you get any new cells and even then the bms could kill itself if the power is removed.

The value of that laptop is going up:

It might be worth the same as it's original price, in about 20 years lol.

Very interesting. It's worth a go keeping it alive - it's actually very useful, has a sim slot, keeps track of my work emails, I actually can work on the hoof, reprograms my Bafang on the road, it's a hard working little thing. The new ultrabooks are all too damn big, else I'd get a GPD Pocket, which is too big for any pocket. Can't do everything with phones yet...

It's about to get an SSD (M2 drives are cheap these days), which use less power. Thankfully, nothing is glued in, unlike many new laptops.

The most repairable laptops are old Thinkpads - i7 CPUs, full HD screens can be added, trackpads upgraded, motherboards replaced with brand new ones, BIOSs replaced, new keyboards and battery packs easily obtained, and they're built to last. Anyway, this is all a segway from your battery cell revival investigation...
