Hi all,

 

Here we are, it's time now to launch the new range of our electric bikes. The new E-mate series will be based on the 4 different models (at least for now: XC, City, Race and Supreme). It's all one frame design but many different faces. Firstly each bike may seem to be looking almost indentical but all are built for different purposes i.e Race is designed for off road and Supreme for touring and long distance commuting. Anyway, there is not much from me to say for now at least. I would like to invite everyone to look at the website. You can find there the full range of bikes and all other related information. Enjoy and as always feedback is more than welcome including that negative one.

Congrats Andrew. I`ve had a good look around your excellent site and must say it`s nice to get a good deal of info about the bikes and maintenance. The weights and specs seem good and the lines just look nice. I think you have done a good job taking over the Oxygen name and upping the stakes at the same time. If they ride like they look then you will be on a winner.

Nice to see the weight is under 20kg, is that including the battery? shwarbe tyres as standard as well the seat looks a bit Errr..... radical for my posterior.

 

I would like to know a bit more about the battery/battery tech/ manufacturer as this is where most of the cost seems to be in e bikes these days these days.

yes Eddie the weight of the Race model is below 20kg including the battery 13Ah battery. We saved a lot of weight on the various components and as you mentioned the saddle is Errr... but it just looks so good and saves us weight.

 

The Race and the Supreme models are actually assembled in the UK from our base model and off course we realise that not everyone will be happy with that saddle. Those who wish to have more comfy one we can off course fit the Velo plush one which is very very comfy. The drawback is however that the weight moves than up to over 20kg.

 

With regards to the battery it's a 37V 13Ah Lithium Polymer pack with compound cathodes. The pack is manufactured by Safty Energy. There is more info about the technology we use. just look at the link: Technology on Oxygen Electric Bicycles

I can confirm the build quality of the Oxygen having tested it so heavily over the last 2 months. It is impressive and we have therefore decided to add this to our range of quality bikes.

Electric Bikes UK - Oxygen Emate City electric bike with 37V 13Ah Lithium Polymer battery at 50cycles London

 

I've been riding this model a lot to and from the shop in Richmond, carrying all 15 stone of me, plus laptop, tools, chargers, clothes - and it's coped admirably in all conditions. This is the first full-size twist and go bike we've had in stock since, well, since 2007. It's all coming back now - when it's really, really warm, just letting the motor do its stuff is fantastic. We've been holding out for the battery technology to catch up with the demands of full throttle ebiking after some earlier disappointments, and its all fallen into place with this bike: good handling, comfortable, fast (seems to cruise along at a fair clip on a full battery, pedalling in top gear), nice components, good looks and a helpful and responsive service from Andrew.

 

I learnt on Tuesday that covering the same 6-mile route in a car at rush hour is seriously stressful, one traffic jam after another as the journey time ticks towards 1 hour... it's been a timely reminder of the utter suitability of electric bikes in congested areas.

 

Come and take one for a spin up Richmond Hill if you're in the area.

yes as Eddie pointed out any bike now with extra kick is considered as illegal. I wish we could add a speed re-restrictor but it's beter to stay on the legal side. Who knows maybe one day we will all be allowed to use 500W bikes.

 

The E-mate Race is for off road and the difference is that its fitted with Racing Ralph tyres used by several XC champions. The tyres itself will give you a nice contact with mud and that's what the off roading is all about.

There is Deore LX rear dera which is more precised in a muddy conditions comparing with the Acera or Tournay.

Hi Wurly,

 

The big problem of the hub motors is that these do not have a gearing system such as crank drives which use the bicycle cassette as a gear box. This obviously causes a loss of efficiency, particularly on the certain levels of speed (usually the low speeds). This is a higly complex topic we could have a chat for hours about it but I try explain in a very simple way.

 

Try to imagine a car that has only one gear i.e third. It is possible to start moving a car on the third gear providing that you heavily press accelerator and very gently release the clutch. The car will move but it won't like it. if you would have a computer showing you how much petrol is consuming in that moment you would be terrified.

 

This car will however only have it's maximum efficiency at the average speed of 25-30mph. The efficiency will start decreasing again once you gain a speed of approx 50-60miles because the engine will be working on its maximum RPM.

 

The point is that the maximum efficiency was achieved only at the certain speed and the biggest fuel consumption is at the very low speed or very high. The hub motor will work exactly the same way as the car with only one gear.

 

Now I can drive a car on the 5th gear climbing up very gentle hill and get approx 30mpg if I drive carefully by pressing accelerator pedal very gently.

 

I can also drive the same car on the same gear the same hill speed but get only 20mph. That will happen if I press the accelerator to the end but the car won't be accelerating in effect or will do very slowly because it hasn't got enough torques to gain speed.

 

Now the whole point is that the hub motor works the same way. it runs only on the one gear and has limits when its efficient. If you climb up the sharp hill you might drain battery with 12A current but you also might use 16A of current and go with the same speed. The hub motor will not accelerate if you deliver more amps to the motor just because it hasn't got enough torques to get up there.

 

In effect we might be ride with draining battery with 12A current or 16A current. The difference is NONE or so minor that you won't realise it anyway. You will only realise it in your range just because the 12A still left more Watts hours in the tank (battery).

 

The concept of CPF Controlled Power Flow is to use just enough power needed.

 

You might ask what happens with the other 4A that the battery did put to the motor. The answer is - it's turned out into the heat being simply wasted. The CPF through its electronics constantly tries to minimise the energy losses an only take enough Amps from the battery. This is why we call it Controlled Power Flow - because all the amps are in effect controlled when they flow through wires.

 

I know this might be a bit confusing but I tried to explain in the simplest possible words for every reader to understand how CPF works and what it is about.

Yes I agree it's something quite between Specialized Globe Vienna and the 905. But overall I quite like. I think the race one looks very good, just so sporty. Specs seems to be quite ok too, well done Andrew and all the best with that. Do you only sell online are you going to have a dealers across the country? Any dealer in Manchester?

with regret but still no dealer in Manchaster. It seems to be that the nearest from you is the 50Cycles who have a demo in Laughborough so you can try with them.
