Who on here can remember the days when crackling was given away for free when you bought a portion of chips? I'm not so sure if the climate has anything to do with it, but you could SMELL the fish & chip from miles away.

Anyone still having the milk man deliver to you at your home?

When was the last time someone had seen a stag beetle ?

Anymore memories anyone?

pop man

Came on a Thursday, Corona was the brand.

6 bottles for £1

I used to love cream soda!

Coal man called for his money on a Friday.

My grandad used to have a chap call every 3 months to collect about 10p for the rental of his Grundig (I think) radio. Radio Rentals?

Chimney sweep man, when I was very young! I used to wait outside ready to shout as the brush came out of the pot!

Parched peas and hot dog man n the Winter. It actually was an Ice cream van who sold ice cream in the summer and parched peas and hotdogs in the winter.

Rag and bone man on a horse drawn cart ... ala Steptoe & Son

Chips in Newspaper.

Buying cigs individually and put in a sweets paper bag. "get me 5 No.6 and 10 no. 10's :)

We called them scratchings and they are still available usually from chip shops around here....as is the smell.

I used to be a milk man.....well.....woman :eek:

Saw a stag beetle last year.

I can remeber the corner grocers shop having sawdust on the floor and wrapping sugar, butter etc in paper.

Milkman had a horse and cart.

Used to go to school sometimes by tram for a farthing, or was it a halfpenny :confused:

And I remember my fetish for tar which saw my mam having to extricate me from the road when my knickers got stuck in it as I sat there happily sniffing a lump of it when they were busy tarmac'ing our cobbles.....:eek:

When was the last time you saw white dog **? I can't say I miss it though. Mind you, I made some nice white ones myself once after a Barium meal test.

Bread also was delivered from the baker's van.

Then there was all the things we used to do:
building a cart out of pram wheels;
playing cricket in the street;
roller-skating with those buckle-on adjustable skates that you got for Xmas (if you were lucky);
indoor fireworks with Snake in the Grass and Snowstorm;
Getting stale cream cakes from the baker;
Newting for King Cresters with a cotton reel, matchstick and tied on worm;

I'll have to stop now or I'll start crying.

One male last (apology for) Summer. London though, which is one of the remaining strongholds for them, very scarce almost everywhere else.

But we have lots of increasingly less common species, snapped this brown argus a few days ago for the local wildlife reserve website:

Here's the link for that FSW website Fauna page:

British Bulldogs

Spiral (line of people holding hands in a row. lad at one end rotates, everyone else starts to, lad on the other end runs like billy'o to keep up.. see how long he lasts until inevitably his legs can't go fast enough and he whizzes off into the bushes or some such other obstacle great fun!)

Follow My Leader (Go down the fields early morning, start jumping brooks and streams, if you touched the water you were out. I was usually one of the firsts as I was a tubby!! :( Sometimes went on all day until tea-time

White dog poo comes from them eating raw bones,so just feed your dog these for a week,or if you want
to mess with peoples heads feed the dog raw bones and sweetcorn.

Being sent to the shop for 6 eggs and bringing them home in a paper bag?

Climbing over the corner shop's wall after it shut at night to pinch the bottles you'd taken back for the deposits earlier on so you could take them back for the deposits again in the morning?

Park keepers?

Proper old-fashioned flashers in long flashermacs?

Gas-meter readers on pushbikes?

Power cuts (and not the scheduled ones we had during that 3 day week lark in the 70's)?

Rag and bone men with a horse and cart?

Watching the bin men who lifted proper dustbins onto their shoulders to take them to the dustcart and if we were lucky the bottom fell out as they did so 'cos it had rusted through?

Coal men delivering in proper sacks from a lorry which had a set of scales on the back with a 56lb weight on one side?

Trams?

Trolley buses?

Bus conductors and proper bus tickets?

Two Way Family Favourites on the Light Program?

And that's without really thinking about it :cool:

BTW, ref white dog****, there was a thing on the BBC News site t'other week about irresponsible dog owners, and some silly wench from Keep Britain Tidy said that things aren't as bad as they used to be dog****-wise because you don't see the white stuff nowadays any more. Fool woman said that's because doggie owners pick it up and take it home so it never hangs around long enough to go white ...

Many, many years ago houses to me seemed to look very cosy and inviting from the outside, because all door bells had lights on them and some people had red light bulbs in their lamp shades or a fire place with flame moving affect.

I dont understand what people are saying about the white dogs doo doo........:confused:

Lynda :)
from the internet.!

The disappearance of white dog poo is down to what dogs eat these days.

White dog poop is the calcium left behind as the water evaporates, and the 'organic' components of the poop are consumed (in various ways) leaving the inorganic stuff behind.

But nowadays dogs don't eat as much bone as they used to, it including bone meal. Also, tighter regulation on dogs *rapping on pavements means that turds don't hang around for years in public places like they used to, giving them less opportunity to dry out and turn white.
