I have the above folding bike and the motor has started to get noisy, does anyone know whether worn parts inside the motor can be renewed or is it a sealed unit and the motor has to be replaced. It still runs ok but it getting noisier when used constantly for a while, short trips such as to the shops are fine, but we did part of the Tissington Trail at the weekend and as it was uphill I was using the motor most of the time, this was when we noticed the noise, I am heavy but within the weight limits of the bike by a long way, could the motor just have gotten hot?. Hubby is able to do some repairs but has never worked on the motor, if anyone knows anymore please let me know, the company will do repairs but not servicing.

We need to see a photo of the motor. Post one here or give us a link to the bike's website.

Noise can come from worn parts or electrical malfunction, so we need some idea of the type of noise.

http://www.folding-bikes.net/asbikes/shop/electrobike-mk3/ thanks for replying here's the company's site sorry but as I've never heard another bike I don't know what it's supposed to sound like but it was very rough/noisy at the weekend where as on a short trip to the shop I just hear it going with the same noise as since we got the bike last year. We bought it secondhand but it hadn't had much use and its still on the orriginal battery so we don't know the exact age but the seller said it was only a couple of years old.

Is it rough at all speeds? Does it still make full power when it's noisy?

having said that it did cut out once after we'd gone a ways I switched it off then on again and it was fine but the noise etc put us off going any further so we turned back.

It doesn't cost anything to check the motor, so I'd start with that. It's easy to dismantle. Take the motor wheel off the bike. Don't cut the motor wire. Follow it from the motor, cut anything holding it to the frame until you find a connector that can be disconnected.

Once you have it separated from the bike, remove the six screws on the right side to get the side-plate off. You can then pull everything out to inspect the gears.

If you get stuck, ask again.

If it's something in the motor? It'll be samaged gears, which are fairly cheap to replace or a worn bearing, which should also be cheap to replace. There's no oil in there. The gears just have a bit of grease on them.

Take a pic of the rear wheel from the wiring side and post it.
