I'm finally recovered enough to make a start on dismantling my rear hub in order to oil/grease it, and I've already hit a snag with which neither Google nor the data sheet is much help.

I've got as far with the (belt) drive side as in the picture. It's not obvious to me how those two lugs protruding above the slots fit into the scheme of things, so I'm unsure of how I proceed from here. I'm rather hoping somebody can tell me please ...

You take everything off the other end of the axle, then push everything through. It comes out as a complete unit.

Gosh, isn't it easy when you know what you're doing ...

Thank you :)

Aaaaargh ,,,

So I got the disc off and removed the flanged nut, leaving things as in the photo. Can't find anything helpful online, so how on earth do I proceed now?

You should be able to wiggle it out from the other side.

Sorry if i'm being really dumb here, but in your first reply on this thread, you said I take everything off the other end (i.e. the brake side) then push the guts through, which I assumed meant I push from the drive side.

I can't take everything off the brake side, because I can't see where I go from the picture in my last post in order to do just that!

So I'm stuck. I guess I remove the "washer" through which the balls are visible then lift the race out. But how does that "washer" come out?

I have no experience to offer, but from your second picture and the advice above I would be wondering if the axle would tap out from there?

It's a thought, but it's not the axle that needs to come out - it's pretty much the complete contents of the hub. There are videos of the process on YT, but as is often the case, none of them show the brake side of a Nexus IGH that has the disc retained by the "nut" that's removed by a cassette lockring tool (as opposed to the disc being attached by bolts which just unscrew).

The hub internal should exit from the drive side.

As said, tap the l/h axle end to drive the whole innards out of the hub shell in one piece. That's what I did to replace the whole innards when my Nexus 5 failed, buying another, knocking out its inner and installing it in my existing hub shell.

Right. Success. The problem was the word "tap", plus the fact that I served my time as a toolmaker, therefore I still have an aversion to using brute force when logic says it shouldn't be needed .

However, in the end I reached the "sod it" point and resorted to a fair old whack with the rawhide end of a size 3 copper and rawhide mallet, whereupon I achieved the objective. Quite why it needed that much persuasion I have no idea, but I'm past caring.

Thank you to one and all for your help with this :)

Well done!

My first hollowtech 2 crank gave me the same fears, so much so that I took it to a bike shop. The kind knowledgeable man in the shop charged me nothing to hit it harder than I dared with a soft mallet!
