Hello everyone, I thought I would sign up to the site to get more involved in the great subject of Pedelec! I have been interested for about a year now ever since I saw an electric folding bike in a electric store. My first thought was 'wow' why do I not know about this already! My second thoughts were 'where do I get one'!
After much searching on the web and deciding that I already have a neglected bike, I would have a go at building my owb with the purpose of getting back into cyling for leisure and for transport to work in these times of high transport cost.
My first build was a 1000w 48v rear wheel geared hub design from E-bike bms in China. I had quite a bit of trouble with the build including a faulty controller, this took several weeks to sort. After finally getting the bike running I took it out for a spin and was hooked. After a while I decided that I had probably not gone for my preferred set up. I found that the weight of this kit with a heavy LifePO4 battery over the rear wheel was quite unstable downhill, in the dark, raining at speed! The power was great but the bike just felt too heavy!
I decided to sell the kit as it was surplus power and weight. I then sat back down and re examined what I wanted. I decided to go for the opposite end of the spectrum with a 350watt 24v set up, rear wheel geared motor from E-life bike. The service and price was good, avoided import duty too! I got the battery a Li-ion 12ah from Freego who were good and got away with £18 import duty.
I put the kit together with no issues. I opted for a thumb throttle, no brake cut out leavers, no PAS, basically push an go. The battery is frame ounted bottle style which I have covered with protective wrapping and the motor is lighter than the old one. The bike handles GREAT! The power is no match but I am still young (36) and active so I just need bit of help up the hills to arrive at work without a sweat. A distance of 10miles.
I have been out along the A6 to matlock Bath, a return journey of 35 miles and the battery has the legs. This set up is more manageable and I can cruise at about 18-20mph on the flat and 13 on the hills.
Hope you like my pics.
I have just ordered a new controller with a three speed switch and I might try the PAS but need a different BB to fit the magnet sensor.
Hope you found this ramble useful / interesting.
