I tried to ride my e-mtb through last winter but the trails many of which are also used by horses were almost impassable and if I went into the Yorkshire Dales the bogs were quite capable of swallowing both me and my bike and when I got home I didn't really didn't enjoy an hours cleaning in the cold and rain.

So here is my new arrival (Giant owe Phill some commission ) hopefully I'll be able to get quite a few road miles in this winter and also p*ss of a few roadies.

First impressions of the bike are very positive with plenty of power and fun to ride. I feel I got a good deal with Winstanleys but they are very much an online company and the customer service in the showroom leaves a lot to be desired. But I knew what I wanted and eventually came away happy (mainly with the price) .

Add to that premature wear and tear of components, and never ending cleaning of clothes.

I can't blame you at all, last winter seemingly went on far too long.

Enjoy the new ride. :)

Is the gearing high enough to peddle at 24-25 MPH with out your legs being a blur? Especially if you are a badass!

What is happening with the design classic?

As regards being embarrassed on the road, 15,5mph is a reasonable roadie pace.

And the Giant must be one of the easiest ebikes to pedal above the limit, so Izzy should be able to bang in some extra effort here and there to defend his honour.

I've fallen into a couple of races with roadies.

It can be a bit touch and go on the flat, but they usually start going backwards at the slightest incline.

In the UK, an incline is only ever around the next corner.

No need to buy a badass just place a magnet 12mm diameter inside the pedal spindle and mount the speedo pickup to catch the cadence signal, the Yamaha motor is the only one that can be tuned this way.

I haven't checked the cog sizes as yet but it's got 22 gears so should be fine for 25mph . However I do like to work at pedaling so as on my Haibike I tend to use eco mode for all but the steepest Hills and power off on the flat.

The Mercedes Smart Designer Classic was bought with my wife in mind as she has shown some interest in coming out for a ride but as she is waiting for a knee op it will be next spring now before she even thinks about it.

I have ridden it out a few times now and did a 30 mile canal ride last week and it was fine and is a really well made, high quality bit of kit . . But it is more suited to be a commuter road bike and for that it would be ideal. So if anyone fancies making an offer I could be tempted to let it go.

Top gear is 50X11 which would give close to 30mph at a cadence of 80 rpm.

Did a 40 miler around the dales today on my giant and easily left 2 roadies behind due to the up and down nature of the roads around Burnsall.
I have gone the other way in that the giant is a fine weather bike and the mtb is for the winter..

I like a bit of weather and will go out in most conditions especially if the weather is cold and dry and the ground is frozen. But if it is mild and wet like the last couple of winters it will be nice to have the option.

Where I Mtb ride locally around Harewood and over to Harrogate are bridalways which see quite a bit of use by horse riders. There are a couple riding schools one at Harewood and another at Sicklinghall so once the tracks soften up the hooves destroy the tracks for cyclists and walkers with 6" deep mud.

So although you can battle your way through, both myself and my bike arrive home caked, to the extent that I've found the best way to clean my self is to use the power washer, then I have to wash all the mud off the bike and then clean up all the mud on the driveway . So a 2 hr ride needs another hours cleaning up.

However this Winter I intend to explore the grouse shooting tracks around Bolton Abbey as they are well surfaced but maybe "not quite" legal. .

What are the tracks like across Ilkley Moors and do you have a favourite route.

A few points to answer here.
To begin with I am not so adventurous and do not get myself into the state you describe as I do not enjoy being caked in mud or the cleaning up after so leave that to those that do.
Due to my personal circumstances it is difficult for me to get away for more than a couple of hours so tend not to go far.. mostly on the canal after tea in the dark.
My son is a winter mtb rider and knows a few interesting routes around here so I go with him when I can and will post some routes later if your interested.
My daughter lives in ilkley so go there regularly but it's up to Keighley gate and a mad dash down the old roman road and then back the same way.
There is one ride I would like to try but not alone so waiting for offspring to be available .
Experimenting with strava route builder at the mo and tried my first route yesterday around Grassington, Bolton abbey to Ilkley and home. I like the idea of seeing how far it is, the elevation gain and approximately riding time.. in this case I beat the estimate by 20 minutes...
E-bikes rule...
