New Batteries - Lightweight 9aH for about £40?

These seem too good to be true! They're 2mm longer so I believe the bit about LVC and HVC, but how much current can they give and is that capacity real? I've ordered some for testing to see. I'll report back in a couple of weeks - hopefully.

I don't think I have the skill to transform that into usable battery. But I would love to know that is possible. £40 lightweight battery? That would make all ebikes affordable as long as it works better than SLA.

Indeed I'm sure I read reviews of 18650 cells with just over 4ah capacity about 6months ago. I can't imagine the C rate being particularly high to achieve that capacity. But at the cost you could afford to buy a few more to make up the difference.

Although I'm sure your not meant to use protected cells in pack building. So ideas anyway. I have no first hand experience. An the only pack building I've done is with some cells d8veh sent me.

Which thanks are in order they work well. I've also made some USB connections for charging too for a festival in about 6months.

If Panasonics biggest capacity 18650 is 3100mah costing roughly $15 a cell then I'll be suprised if those ebay ones make more than 2200mah.

Do you have a hobby charger to test one? (and a fire proof container lol!).

Hi guys,

If I can give you a bit of advice then don't buy those cells. 4250mAh from one 18650 cell is really a lot what means it's a high capacity cell but not high power. This cell has a very low discharge C rate that simply won't do in an electric bike. You could maybe power the laptop with cells like those but defo not an ebike. Don't buy unless you want to loose some money.

If I can say the best cells by far are 2200mAh that can have 2C (that's at least what we need for ebikes). I know Samsung is working now on the 2500mAh but they still can't give guarantee it will do well in the ebike.

The issue is what is the chemistry ? are they safe ?

The Konion based cells found in Makita tool packs are 1.6Ahs and have a safe chemistry to be made up in packs, without a BMS and discharged at 10C. Hard to get hold of though.
I agree with others IMHO no way will those cells hold 4250mAh and even if they do, no way will they discharge safely at 10C.

Post a link on Endless Sphere, many over there have tried everything in terms of DIY battery builds.

Amigfan do you have a link for those $15 cells ?

Franck, I've seen these battery but I'm not sure what that worth.

Any idea about the calendar life (or shelf life) and capacity loss after 1-2 year?

Frank they only have a 800 charge cycle life. The Konions as I understand have a cycle life of many many more times than that.

If I could readily get hold of them I would build a 36V, 3.0Ah pack which I suspect would out perform my 36v, 2.3Ah A123 packs being lighter and of a higher capacity. Having invested in three A123 packs now and with all the charging equipment for them its not worth it though. The Konions would require me to change all three of my bulk chargers. As stated unless you could get them from a reliable source its not worth it. I have found a German site that sells the individual new cells for 10 Euros each. That would work out at about £40 more than my A123 packs.

I bought 4 "3000mAh" 18650 cells off a China eBay seller, 2 arrived dead, and they were longer than standard 18650 cells for a reason - I took the wrappers off the dead ones to discover they were repackaged used Panasonic 17670 cells, inside a plastic tube to make them as wide as a 18650 cell along with spot welded end caps and a new wrapper that says 3000mAh. Actual capacity of the working ones was less than 1000mAh and under heavy load even less capacity.

They were bought for testing my charger/discharger I'm near completing (having trouble with the programming of charge/discharge/charge cycle) so they did their job but I would not buy cells from Chinese eBay sellers for building an ebike battery.
