One question immediately raises itself -
Why on Earth has an article published on the University of Cambridge's own site got microseconds in quotation marks? And then goes on to explain what a microsecond is?
Unbelievable.

Nice one Alex for looking at things in a natural sense, I wonder what insects think about us as humans ?

I know what this notch horned cleg fly was thinking just as she bit into me for some blood, "Food!". Fly on the back of my hand and wound shown, click to enlarge:

Ouch - pesky critter .. did it bite you whilst you were taking the photo ? :). Had a lot of horse-flies this Summer in Devon. One poor local guy had an allergic reaction to a bite and popped his clogs. Most unlucky and most unusual !

Yes, I knew it was going to bite but wanted the photo of it. Had a swollen hand for a couple of days but not too painful. It's the females who need blood to produce their eggs, the males are happy with flower nectar.

I got bitten by something in July and a week later developed a low-grade fever, with hot and cold flushes, chills, aches, pains, dizziness, etc. That lasted for about ten days or so and I never caught sight of the little bleeder that caused it. I hadn't put the two events together right away, but it could have been anything - horseflies are common enough around here.

Sounds like a Tick bite, they carry Lyme disease which is no joke and has similar symptoms as you had. I would seriously get checked out now.

flecc, it's not their fault if they find you a sweet human. Anyway, treat that bite before it gets infected.

MS.
That was back in early August, they only have a short season and had disappeared well before the end of the month. I didn't bother with treatment, I've been bitten by such a variety of things I seem to have a fair degree of immunity from any serious consequences, just suffering swelling at times.

Insects seem to like landing on me, these two are enjoying themselves, click to enlarge:
