Just for Bosch? Wot no 3 pin plug socket for us generics? Ver ver disappointing.... :(

I had a good look at the Zap Map a little while back, and there is another possible route to charging ebikes at charging stations, where one is allowed to contact the owner, who may be persuaded to allow use of a domestic 240V outlet? They may charge for a charging fee? After paying for the app, contact details of private charging station owners are allegedly revealed.

Bosch will pay them to bork batteries so that they can sell them new batteries, or new bikes, after making older batteries unavailable... (there's no evil corp icon)

I expect someone will come up with a hack which fools charging stations into thinking a Bosch bike is connected, then stick a converter on the end to charge their generic ebike, for 10 hours at 2A, holding up a huge line of irate Bosch bike owners... or watch them pedelec sadly by because they couldn't book a slot, then slow to a stop, dismount their useless bike and eventually join the ranks of the homeless, using the Bosch bike frame as a trellis to grow tomatoes out of McDonalds coffee cups filled with their own faeces, interspersed with coins tossed in from as far away as possible by kind generic ebike owners holding their noses, who did manage to pedelec home...

Well you can undestand, from Boschs perspective, if these charging staions included advanced battery fault detection systems not available on the normal user chargers.

After all profit safety is paramount.

It's also an opportunity to sack firmware-updating Bosch engineers - the checkout process will include as an option "Would you like a premature and irreversible bricking firmware update with that?" next to cashback.

I don't really understand the logic...

They're putting ONE charge station on the Bristol to Bath cycleway (which I have cycled a few times). That route is just 13 miles each way. Who but an idiot would need to charge their e-bike along the way? If there are such idiots, they're usually in clusters of 20 or so (OAP groups)... so presumably a queue is going to form while each waits for an hour in turn?

There's also a high probability it's going to be vandalised by druggies within the first week of operation, so I wouldn't want to depend on it... that's also assuming you yourself don't get mugged/knifed and your bike stolen on that route (as commonly reported).

There will be FOUR on the 234-mile Caledonian Way route in Scotland. Would you trust/depend on them to be operational when (if you carry your own charger instead) you could shelter from the inevitable gales and rain sitting in a warm pub or cafe of your own choosing for a couple of hours?

I can understand the usefulness of e-bike chargers for EMTB's in the mountains of Switzerland, where IIRC that's where this public Bosch charger malarky started. But on a 13 mile route on a flat ex-railway bed from Bristol? Nonsense.

It's a sales promotion for Bosch equipped pedelecs. A notional assurance to potential pedelecers that choosing a Bosch equipped bike instead of any other might offer en route charging, should that ever be needed.

In the main it is nonsense, for the day rambler with a bosh bike they will be of no use except may be locals who want a free charge and can sit about waitng so.
They might be of use to some touring cyclists but again they will have made sure their needs are already catered for. If a serious tourist is planning along trip then like Matt they will have things sorted so not to rely on a source they specicficly would have to ride to, to use it.

No, you shouldn't. Because it's you (Bosch motor e-bike owners) paying for this infrastructure, whether you use it or not.
