As others have implied, trust has to be very superficial in our complex society, especially in large towns and cities, it's best to be permanently street-wise with just a veneer of trust for appearances sake.

unfortunately, the police is correct. He's got the (loaned) Brompton with your consent and his promise to refund your disboursement is not enforceable.
