I am thinking of getting a decent tool that will do almost everything to keep me going in event of puncture breakdown etc. Don't want to be carrying loads of spanners. Does such a thing exist??

Yes. There are many very high quality branded ones made by Winride (e.g Crank Brothers. Lezyne). To buy from Winride, you need to buy a box of 1000 or so. Many people do, and then they sell them on Ebay unbranded. The unbranded ones are identical to the branded ones, but much cheaper.

Unfortunately, there's many unbranded ones, not made by Winride, that are just cheap rubbish. This is one product that I wouldn't buy a low quality cheap one.

I've just had a look through Ebay and Amazon, but I can't see any Winride ones at the moment. You can always buy a used Crank Bros one from Ebay

I have an old topeak hexus which has a variety of Allen keys, flat and pozi screwdrivers, tyre levers and most importantly as Eddie says a chain tool. I was caught once miles from anywhere with a rear mech ripped off by a stray tree branch and without the ability to shorten the chain and single speed it I would have been stranded.

You have just spoilt my evening, I have a spare mech hanger in my mtb bag but don't have one for my Haibike! I am still more comfortable on the mtb (a lot lighter and better forks) on ready rough terrain than on the Haibike but the gap is narrowing I'm hoping I cannot get away with it until I get home.

I suspected that the metal of this tool would be soft, like cheese. But I've just used it to adjust my back brake and turned it quite hard to lock the hexagonal nut with an allen key. It was a good tight fit and solid as I tightened it off hard. Not bad at all.
