"Mud Stop" for Bosch CX....500KM Later

So.... the 1.005% wear on my chain was rapidly approaching the park 3.2 checker needed some pressure to drop in.... I changed the chain, thoroughly cleaned the EX1 cassette and jockey wheels and installed a new 16t sprocket. ... after removing the "Mud Stop" (bit of a reassuring battle lol).... well.... the inside was dirt free, there was a bit of wear to the black casing finish as I had expected. But a quick degrease of the mud stop and clean of the drive splines and regrease, all put back together and torqued up ( treated myself to some tools I now know are necessary! )..... very impressed at how clean the whole thing was and the grease on the crankshaft is holding up brilliantly too.... verdict? Get one.... prevention is better than cure....

i took my motor apart and it looks like brand new inside just goes to show if you look after them they will last for years and years.

Cairngorms...always wet, dirty and no tarmac. I've got the SRAM EX1 groupset- a chain is £17 from Winstanleys or a cassette is £300+.... hmmm... change it out before the chain destroys the cassette....

when the cassette wears out id go to eagle 12spd 4 more gears and loads cheaper

I like the EX1 mate...and it's a 10 speed set up on an 8 speed which means a tighter range at the back on the cassette and a 48t low means I get up everything. I could drop from 16T to 14T at the front but yet to find the need for that low gear ( Bosch being 2.5 ratio means going from a 40t to 35t)

you can have 2 front sprockets so you can have 16t and 14t.

I'm running the SRAM X-Sync sprocket (AKA "narrow/wide)...not sure if 2 could be put side by side with the Magura chain guard/lockring?

just use the lock ring that comes with the sprocket but you cant use the sram ones with it so you will need a normal 14t to go with it.

if the ex1 chain is to thick you can use a sram 10spd chain.

SRAM 10 speed is the same gauge as the EX1 as it's the black powerlock connector link

I guess that I can't be riding through anything muddy enough, and wet enough.

Mine have always looked that clean without a Mud Stop fitted. The difference is that my motor cases till have the paint, where the Mud Stop has rubbed it away.

but what does it look like inside the motor? tbh i think it is a good idea 1-2 times a year to crack it open and have a look clean and add some lube

I knew that there would be inevitable friction and a bit of wear on the casing. But beyond that a whole lot cleaner than the bog standard bosch seal.... I like it. it works....!

You're in the muddy, silty probably clay areas of the UK and i'm in a very harsh always wet abrasive place Eddie.... god knows what the geology does but I'd just rather be proactive and stop damage rather than deal with it later when the bike is F'd

Unless riding on the South Downs, the soil around is sand based and very acidic and abrasive.
