Motor information.

My main occupation is electronics. I am often given things in a non working state. I was given a old Giant E bike. I wish to use this too and from work. The rack which the battery and controller are mounted on came lose and pulled the wires.

I wish to check the motor, it says DC, there are two large wires, not sure which is negative and positive. I am sure the direction of rotation will be a clue! What are the thin leads, hall effect switch. I will probably end up making or buying a basic PWM motor controller and make some sort of battery pack.

It's a three phase motor, so i doubt that you'll be able to make a controller for it. There's various collaborations to try and make an open source one, but I'm not sure whether they've got there yet.

You can only test the motor with a properly working controller, but you can get a good idea if it's working by measuring A/C volts between each pair of phase wires while you rotate the motor backwards. If all three phases generate, it's probably OK.

It's also sensorless. Sensorless controllers are not so common now and not as good as the latest sine wave ones for sensor motors. The one I'd recommend is this one from Greenbikekit. You should get one with an LED or LCD control panel because they have three or 5 levels of pedal assist. The cheaper ones without panels are only really suitable for throttles only, which is crap.

The three thin wires are probably for a speed sensor, though it might be a temperature sensor. Switching 0v to 5v when you turn the motor backwards means a speed sensor. Fixed voltage between 0v and 5v is a temp sensor. It has to be powered with 5v to test. Whatever that sensor is, you don't need it. I'd cut the connector off and solder the three phase wires directly to the controller's ones.

Only to add my recentish purchase of a non hall , sensorless controller (a Kunteng or KT ) came from panda ebikes in the UK

I've still yet to experience sine wave or even hall sensored motor! (Not experience , I mean own)
