Motor for Tandem

Featured Replies

Before taking the plunge and buying an electric bike, I am considering the possibility of basing the bike on a kit and sharing the kit with my tandem (2 throttles, 2 controllers, 1 motor, 1 battery, ...). The tandem would be for occasional use.

The Ezee system seems to be well thought of here. Would this do, or is Heinzmann the most appropriate? Or, any other suggestions? I rather prefer the cost of the Ezee! And I might consider an Ezee bike, plus Ezee kit minus battery, which would be convenient.

How do these compare on climbing ability, noise and pedalling without power?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

If you're only going to have one motor, then you only need one controller. Why do you need two throttles? Surely only one person needs to operate it, or why not use a pedal sensor?

Sorry, perhaps my question was unclear. The idea was to have a throttle and controller on each bike. I would then just have to swap the battery and wheel when I occasionally wanted to use the tandem.

Another way might be to use a cheaper, separate complete system (Alien?) for the tandem.

There's a blend here. Set up both bikes with motors, controllers and switch gear, but just have one battery.
When you buy your motors, controllers, sensors, throttles etc from BMSbattery.com, they're so cheap that you can easily afford 2 of each! As Jbond says, you only need one battery - just make a common connector between the two installations.
