Motor fault

Hi all , just joined today , have to say this looks like a fantastic forum from what i've read .
I have a question i hope you can help me with , i've seen a Powabyke for sale and the seller says it has this fault , see below

The seller says - I tested bike on collection and it was fine, but after 10 minutes ride the motor started stuttering, cutting off and back on intermitently. I did recharge batteries overnight and on the following day, same thing. I have the feeling that the seller genuinely replaced the batteries hoping this would solve the problem.

Do you think that this could be a major fault that isn't repairable or would cost a lot of money to fix ? Or could it be a simple fix .

Thanks Wizard

I imagine its easy to fix for someone who knows how to fix it! So it depends on how happy you are opening up a hub motor.

Personally I'm not so, given that there are plenty of working Powabykes for sale, I'd give it a miss and go for another one. But if you're confident - good luck!

It may be someting simple like a loose or corroded connection or it may be something more serious like a controller fault, it really isn't possible to diagnose from a distance. As Frank says there are plenty of working bikes for sale so unless you can get it very cheaply its probably best to look elsewhere

Hi Wizzard,

What model Powabyke is it?

Most models now have a self diagnostic built into them which can easily identify problems. My first instinct though would be to check the throttle. Let me know what you decide to do and please contact me if you require a local service centre as there are many who can solve the problem for you.

At that price it looks ok, but there might possibly be a snag. There were a couple of UM models which used SLA batteries of a size that's no longer made, so no replacement possible. The batteries are separate coupled units inside the case.

Yours may not be one of those models, so don't worry until it's replacement time. Even if it is one of those, it may be possible to use smaller size differently shaped batteries if the range is sufficient for you, the case being quite large.
