Another ebike fire story, at least the lazy journalists now identify that it's the batteries that are dangerous and dodgy chargers are most likely cause, only took them a missed opportunity of years when they could've been educating the public and blamed 'ebikes'...

Family flat wrecked by battery fire, the story conveniently skirts the fact that its most likely the son's fault for using cheapo ebike battery/dodgy charger for his delivery job. They didn't have any insurance either so son had start a go fund me, ouch... The son should be charged for negligence and criminal damage, poor neighbours.

Make you own mind up, should be available on iPlayer 6 o'clock 'BBC London' news at approx 11mins

Hang around for a while in this forum and you might see posts claiming that so called 'battery fires' are not a problem at all, very rare even, so forget about them.

A pic of the guys bike, of the undamaged parts, painted a picture of a complete wreck of a frankenbike. It looked like it had 2 batteries, probably wired in some dodgy manner.

At least there were no casualties.

That bike is nothing to do with black Friday sales
Nobody has said anything about black friday sales It's only talked about cheap conversion kits.

Theres a job for you. A consultancy about installing conversion kits safely. You could open up a YT channel giving advice on what to look for, what to avoid, and proper safe installation.

Can you not read the headline? Let's try again. I'll write it bigger for you.
‘A dodgy bike burnt down my home – don’t be tempted to buy one this Black Friday’
From the text:
The London Fire Brigade also issued a warning, along with charity Electrical Safety First, that online Black Friday bargains could prove more costly than their price tags due to faulty batteries exploding.

I wonder what capacity battery battery that was? Some delivery drivers seem to do 12 hour shifts - about three X 20Ah? Costs stack up. Not surprising if they opt to buy the cheapest available, rather than battery packs composed of high quality cells made by a manufacturer with a good reputation. It'd also be tempting to charge these cheap battery packs fast and hot, in time to be ready for the following day's 12 hour shift.

It's controversial videos which are viewed most. You have to dig quite deep into Youtube to find quality information, and those videos don't get viewed much at all. In fact, I've seen useful Youtubers morph to useless, after pivoting toward controversy to actually stand a chance of every making any money from their channel. The difference in view rates when they do is amazing. Others upload thumbnails which suggest their videos may be controversial to get more views, which turn out to be useful, but those vids don't get anywhere near the massive numbers of views, that the avalanche of utter shit pushed at you by Youtube's algorithm enriching Google does.

That dude would have had a minute or so of advance warning, if he'd had a Home Ruination by Ebike Battery Fire Expulserating PreTerminator™®©℠ strapped to his battery! By the time there's ignitable lithium-ion battery smoke, it's far too late to do anything but run. Particularly when you're disorientated woken up by smoke alarms, because by then there will be uncontrollable fire. My battery will be rapidly expluserated from my home via an open window when the alarm sounds. You lot can do what you like.

It wasn't a normal ebike battery. You can see the remains of the nailed together wooden box it was rattling about in. We can only guess what was in that box. Could have been a DIY cell-pack with no BMS and made out of recycled laptop batteries through all we know.

Regulation and / or enforcement needs to catch up.

Just like the remuneration aspects of the gig economy, the health and safety aspects need addressing at the company level, rather than the individual rider level.

Require a safety check of the equipment used to do the job, and eliminate shoddy bikes, unsafe charging arrangements etc..
