As seems to be normal when i buy a bike, its buggered. going home from work this evening and slowly lost high and low gears. Phoned 50c and they seem to thing the cable is restricted in some way. Ive got to take it to a local bike shop for a fix which might be a recoverable cost as long as its not my fault in some way:confused: The only issue I have noticed is where the gear cable keeps jumping out where it goes into the changer on the handlebars. I know others have had this problem but not sure if it would cause a problem. I hold out little hope my local bike shop wanting to touch it given how they ran a mile when I mentioned "electric" last time my Torq went tits up.

was supposed to be going to do the Tissington Trail on Sunday given the nice weather forecast. Dont think I can face it now.

It should be easy enough to see if the inner cable is snagging in some way. Pop it into first gear, grab the outer cable where in enters the hub gear and pull it back so you can free the inner and outer cable from the cable carrier - called the cassette joint unit on the diagram. You should then be able to free the inner cable end where it hooks into the hub itself. You can then see if the cable runs free by turning the gear change and looking at the way the end of the cable goes in and out. It is possible the outer cable has got squashed and inhibiting the movement. It is all quite easy and straight forward when you look at it - upside down is better.

My cable did jump initially but ever since I got the new hub it has been fine. Seems unlikely to be a hub problem as you normally lose the top two gears and in this instance it does go into gear but they are no different or lower than fifth gear.

Just some feedback on what the problem was. Many have reported issues around the gear cable jumping out of its holder where it goes into the shifter. My problems stemmed from this. If you do not notice that the cable has jumped out and change gears, it puts undue strain on the cable and will cause it to fray which will in turn limit its ability to move freely. This is the best guess of the bike shop as the cable was frayed at that end.

It took me a huge amount of effort to convince them to work on the bike but hopefully they will be less scared in the future.

It cost £10 for a new inner cable including fitting. Hopefully this jumping will no longer occur but I will be much more vigilent in looking for it.

My cable jumped out of its socket for the first few rides. But now is OK. The same can't be said about the gearing generally.. still rattling and crackling when going uphill and 7th still slipping occassionally. I'm not brave enough to 'strip clean' the parts and re-oil. I have to say that I am not happy with the hub gears at the moment. I am going to take it to a bike shop that deals with powabykes so maybe they will be less fearful and be willing to tinker. Did Lloyd tell you you to send the receipt for work done to them and they would refund, or should the shop invoice 50c diectly?

Hi Tom

have you tried just giving a squirt of oil to the chain tensioner spring. that will do the trick. just flex it back and forth until its moving freely. it made a huge difference to the noise levels. Also as Flecc pointed out, make sure there are no tight links in the chain as this will also cause jumping. once you've done that things should improve a lot.

50c have said I can either have them make a card payment over the phone when i'm in the shop or just send the receipt in and have a cheque.

I'll give it another go.. Good luck with the cable.

Like you I was very disappointed with the hub gear until I discovered that the tensioner was binding due to lack of lubricant. Much better now although I think it will free up a lot more with use. Have a go with some oil on the tensioner with the bike upside down - it should make a lot of difference for very little effort.

rode home after collecting and there was not so much as a squeek from the bike. It is purring!
