After my post on the 14th I decided to give the battery a top-up charge. Despite trying several times, the amber light on the charger would turn immediately to green and the fan did not come on at all. I decided to leave it until I had taken the bike out and see what happened when it needed a full charge.

Finally had good enough weather today, but the battery died within 3 miles of mostly downhill cycling (I was not best pleased at the uphill push back!) It had gone very swiftly to red on the handlebar indicator and finally the electrics cut out totally leaving no lights at all.

On returning home I tried charging the battery. The amber light again goes almost straight to green, this time the fan starts but stops again after 2 or 3 seconds. I presume the battery is not charging at all. Faulty battery? Faulty charger? Both? I'm really disappointed after waiting weeks to have my first ride!

It's possible your charger is shorting at the plug in point-this may cause the battery's internal fuse to blow -the battery still functions but will not charge..This has happened with my Torq 1 charger -causing the battery 5 A blade fuse to need replacing.Flecc or David can give you the low down on any similarities between the Wisper and Ezee systems and also explain this possible solution [and fix] to your problem in a more forthright manner.

Priscilla:

This problem sometimes occurs for the simplest reason.

There are two leads on the charger, one plugs into the 240 volt mains. The other plugs into the battery and you need to check the co-axial plug on this lead.

The centre pin is split. Make sure the charger is not plugged into the mains and then insert a sharp knife blade into the slot of the centre pin and gently spread the pin apart, just a lttle!!. This will give a better fit into the battery charging socket.

If this fails to do the trick then I suggest you contact Norman at Wisper.

All the best
Bob

hi Bob,

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I had read your earlier post on this topic while I was trying to find a solution. Problem is, the connector now appears to have a different design as there is no split pin now.

Other things I have looked at - I've looked at the fuse in the charger -its there and appears ok. I get the same effect regardless of the battery being attached or not - goes straight to green light after a couple of seconds on amber.

I'm really surprised at this on a new bike as I would have thought testing the battery and charger would be a given!

Hi Priscilla,

Yes, I was a bit worried about that, somewhere in the back of my mind I seemed to remember the charging lead had changed.

The best thing to do is contact Norman, Wisper Service Engineer.

Norman Hopkinson
Tel: 07799794520
service@wisperbikes.com

He's a very nice gent who will quickly sort the problem out.

I fully understand your dismay at this failure, but rest assured Wisper will rectify the problem very quickly, they are very good at dealing with failures with new machines.

David Miall, Wisper MD, will almost certainly pick this thread up tomorrow (Monday) and get you on the road as quickly as possible.

All the best
Bob

Problem

Thanks Blew it for standing in! I am very grateful to you. :)

Hi Priscilla, sorry about this, what a pain after waiting all that time for the snow to clear!

I can assure you that our batteries and chargers are thoroughly tested prior to being shipped. Unfortunately during the journey very occasionally a problem that was not obvious during our rigorous QC procedures worsens.

Have you contacted Norman yet?

We will of course replace your charger immediately (and battery if necessary).

Best regards

David

Fingers crossed, the story has a happy ending. I was able to drive to the Edinburgh Wisper shop today taking my battery and charger with me. Using other batteries and chargers we were, by a process of elimination able to pinpoint the problem. It was a fuse in the battery that had failed.(which XCytronex correctly suspected) From there, it was a quick fix and I'm now back home with the battery charging up correctly now.

Might it be a good idea to send spare fuses out with the bikes? The actual fuse changing is a simple task and might save some aggravation if spares were to hand!

Great news

Hi Priscilla

I am really delighted your problem has been resolved.

Thanks for the suggestion re the extra fuse, I have taken your advice and all new bikes will come with one in the box.

Let us know how you get on.

Again please accept my apologies for any inconvenience.

Best regards

David

They are minature fuses and easily available from electrical stores like Maplin, I think a pack of 10 cost me a pound.

Same Problem here!

Hi guys,

I bought 2 of these bikes about 18 months ago and both of them have now suffered from exactly this same problem, ie the light on the charger goes straight to green when trying to charge up. All fuses have been checked and found to be ok.

Fortunately the first battery that died was replaced under warranty as it was not six months old but now my second bike has failed after just 18 months.

Can anyone give me anymore pointers to what the problem may be as I'm not looking forward coughing up for a new battery having already paid 2400 quid for 2 bikes

Oh and to make things even better, the place where I bought the bikes has now closed down. Deep Joy

Problems

Hi Russ

Sorry to hear of your problems.

Please may I have some more detail?

Did you buy the bikes from Stuart Conway of Electric Bike World, Southampton?

All the best David

Hi,

Yes, I bought both of the bikes from The Sammy miller motorcycle museum, which as I understand the company that closed down merged and moved to Southampton.

I cant remember the name of the guy at The motorcycle museum but have phoned the place in Southamton on 2 occasions and was told that a guy called Stuart was busy but would phone me back but never has.

Hope that helps.

Regards Russ

Typical

I am afraid this is typical behaviour from Stuart and his Electric Bike World business, hence Wisper ceasing supply.

If you would like to liaise directly with Norman at the email address below, we will see what we can do to sort you out.

Best regards

David
