Hang on though, this is much better...
Chesterfield Council, you should be ashamed of your selves!

Great link. On a more serious note, its scandalous these lanes exist and those responsible for the planning and implementation should be forced to cycle along them!

Supermarkets inevitably argue, as part of their planning application (See Tescos, Buxton 2011), that they will encourage local cycling...

Makes you think though.
How do other countries such as Belgium and Holland manage?
I think it is a combination of a bloody minded one sideness to help cyclists, backed up by legislation.
Certainly in Belgium, they will grab a chunk of the road width for bkes, even if that leaves only one car lane.

This main road for instance, the inner lane is for bikes, the dotted one for motor cycles, next is a bus lane and then only one carriageway for cars etc.

Talking of cycle paths, I understand that in the past, citizens of the USA have taken the law into their own hands, by painting bike symbols on pavements. Has anyone heard of similar action here in the UK, and news of what the outcome was? I don`t fancy spending Christmas in Wormwood Scrubs.

That is one way, round my way a few years ago, a disgruntled cyclist or vandal......had enough of vehicles parking over cycle lanes and decided to re-estabilish the lines that dissapeared under vehicles by re-painting them over the vehicle.!!
In a way I can understand the frustration, I use those lanes, the area is huge, 4 paving slab wide foot path, then enough room for 2 vehicles abrest and a cycle lane.
