Hello , I'm asking this on behalf of my mother, she is 75 years old, weighs around 11stone and is 5ft2"

She has arthritis and has had both her knees replaced, but she's still quite mobile and can pedal a bike.

She does have issues getting on a bike, and will need one quite low and easy to get on and off

She will use it for pottering about town, and coming on rides with me, about 20-30 miles on flattish ground

Budget is around £1200, but could probably go a bit more if needed

We are going to a shop in Grantham to see some bikes next week

Any suggestions of bikes that might be suitable would be great fully appreciated

I bought my wife a Woosh Santana CD. She can't pedal so wanted a bike on which she could put her feet flat on the ground. She is taller than your mother but we had to change the seat post for an old fashioned straight post with a separate clamp which bolts onto the seat.

The bike goes well enough and has a throttle which your mother might want.

As usual though, try before you buy is always best advice.

J is the same age as your mum; she rode a Juicy bike Classic for years. It's a bit below your budget but gave no trouble at all. J had a replacement hip. Would still be riding the Classic (Dutch bike style) but her balance is wobbly these days and rides a trike. Hope this helps, try as many bikes as you can find - price isn't the only factor!
Best wishes,
Tom.

julie, if your Mum can wait a little bit, the new Woosh Petite would be good.

It has 24" puncture resist tyres, low saddle height, 10AH battery (about 25 mile range), LCD, throttle and pedelec. It's basically a smaller version of the Woosh Santana for riders from 4ft10 to 5ft5.
The top of the saddle is about 79cm from the ground in the picture.
Price: £649.

That's a nice looking bike, can a higher capacity battery be fitted ?

Thank-you, that looks good

It can be done but not a slot in job, the controller box in front of the battery needs changing for the bigger battery.
I guess Woosh will introduce a 15AH Petite at some time, for £100 more.

By the way, this bike is designed/specified by Hatti @ Woosh for herself.

Thanks or the suggestion, we will look in to that one
It has 700c wheels so will almost certainly be too big. Those ones with 24" wheels will probably be much more comfortable.

Just an update, after having a few bike demos my Mum has chosen a FreeGo Wren and its being delivered tomorrow, she's very excited, she really got on well with it.

My resident elderly lady (similar age & height) has had 4 years reliable service from her Juicy Bike Classic (including a number of 25mile charity rides.) She has trouble walking but loves her bike (recently moved onto a trike which she swears by and at ...) Best advice I can give is to try before you buy! :)

How are you getting on with your commuting e bike search?

I'm going to the cycle show at the NEC in September so will hopefully be able to demo a mid drive bike, as on paper at least, that is my preferred type of ebike.

Hopefully after that I will be able to make a more informed decision, I still think an ebike will be a valid option for me, and I'm continuing to increase the distance I'm travelling on my road bike , so hopefully my fitness is improving as well.
