I have an lovely old Sparta dutch bike that has been great but now (older, weaker and less fit) I find it far too heavy to manage. Can anyone recommend a really lightwieght bike that I can pedal most of the time and use motor to assist on hills but that doesnt cost a fortune! suitable for a smallish women.

Hi Lyndy and welcome to Pedelecs.

It's always a bit dangerous to ask the "Can anyone recommend?" question on here as the forum is populated by several ebike sellers and one is liable to be inundated with answers from them, explaining why they have just the product you need.

That said, they are mostly decent people who provide budget to mid-range priced bikes and offer solid warranty you may not get elsewhere. In asking for something lightweight, you need to understand that most ebikes which don't cost a fortune tend to be rather heavy but it depends on each individual's definition of light and heavy.

A dutch bike is a hard act to follow but there are quite a few built in that style though most that I can think of are seriously heavy. If you had indicated a firm budget limit, it would have been easy for forumites to exclude lots of bikes as simply being too expensive. For what it's worth, whenever anyone mentions light weight and pedal-assist to me, I immediately think of Cytronex. All their products are lightweight though the only model I can think of built for ladies is their Quick 4 Feminine. Their prices are upwards of £1500 I think now but you could check their website.

By and large, there is a price premium for light ebikes as there is for regular bikes so if you really need something very light, don't expect to get it for an equally light price! If your Sparta is unmanageable these days on account of weight, then adding a kit would only exacerbate that situation so I can't recommend that course. If you could be a little more specific about budget and how the bike would be used, members here would be better able to point you in the right direction. ie, Will you be commuting? Is the bike purely for leisure? Would a folder suffice?

Perhaps even more pertinently, where is your nearest ebike dealer? That may be a good starting point. If you don't know, then if you tell us which part of the country you're in, we will know.

Regards,
Indalo

Lyndy, what you want is the Holy Grail of ebikes! A light, under 20kg , machine that is nice to ride without power but with assistance when needed, and at a price of around 500 pounds. Sadly, I don't think it exists! If anyone knows better let us know- please!!!

On reflection,Lyndy, it is possible to be too worried about weight. In practice most of us ride with low assist levels which cancel out the weight penalty, and add pedal effort as we choose. There is no advantage in insisting on riding with no assistance . The only real problem with weight is if you need to lift the bike for any reason. All ebikes have some means of adjusting the level of power assistance. My favoured method is with a throttle. So myadvice is to buy the best ebike you can happily afford and join this happy band of ebikers! Welcome!

Hi Lyndy,

Welcome:D

You clearly love your Sparta.

A couple of questions, when you say your Sparta is too heavy to manage, I assume you mean the effort required to pedal it, do you also mean 'manhandling' it when you are not riding?

We supply kits that would give plently of assistance when riding, but would add to the weight, you might find this a problem, so that may not be the solution for you.

As an alternative, you might wish to consider an eZee Sprint Primo which you can see here on our website Bikes & Conversion Kits - Cyclezee Ltd.

The stepthru version is currently sold out, but we will have more in stock by the end of June.

Another model that may be of interest is the eZee Vente which we are considering adding to our lineup later in the year. Please see a photo of this model below.

Hi Lyndy
Try as many bikes as you can! Some dealerships around the country offer a full variety to try. If you can say where you are then I'm sure you'll be given pointers to good dealers with wide ranges in stock near you.
Of course you'd be most welcome to come and try our range at our shops in Buxton and New Mills, South Manchester and we have dealers around the country.
