I've been following this, not through interest in the issues raised but more for the one not raised.

What on earth was a doctor doing as the Minister of Defence, sending men out to kill?

As a GP he had taken the Hippocratic oath to protect and preserve life to the very best of his abilities, and never on any account to take a life or cause one to be taken.

Nor should anyone fall for the euphemism "defence". For hundreds of year up into the early 20th century the MOD was correctly known as the Ministry of War, but when Britain invented propaganda, the change of name was a very early example of propaganda "double-speak".

And on a flippant note, why were Labour hounding Liam Fox? Weren't they the party that most wanted to ban fox hunting with hounds?

Why did he take so long? Some of are sufficiently long in the tooth to remember the Profumo scandal and this sorry state of affairs was beginning to look as though there could be many similarities.

It is wholly unacceptable for ministers to behave as Fox has done but for me, the most startling part of the matter was when the Prime Minister jumped in at an early stage and gave Fox his unreserved backing. One suspects that had Cameron waited for the verdict of the investigation committee, he would have been obliged to follow suit and fall on his sword......and someone has probably pointed that out to him! That being the case, I'd hazard that Cameron has told Fox to ship out and save any further disgrace for both of them.

Thank God for investigative journalists!

Indeed Indalo, the days when those even slightly guilty of error resigned immediately are long distant.

I think Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington was perhaps the last such man of honour, resigning in 1982 over his belief that he and his department were to blame for the lack of adequate preparation for the Falklands war.
