October 22, 20214 yr Hi all! I'm new to electric bikes and I was wondering if any of you could help with these issues I have on an electric bike. I changed the controller to this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001359636714.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dmc6BWz It didn't come with a PAS sensor, so I installed a 12 magnets one I bought from eBay, but quickly realised 12 magnets are too much, so took half of them. I have two issues: 1) The PAS sensor works in both directions, making it not very safe IMHO. 2) The second issue is that the LED display has tree modes, one mode one I barely notice the electric motor helping at all, but mode 2 and 3 are way too fast? It appears that the LED display uses UART communicates with the controller. Is there any way it can be adjusted or "hack" to change these settings. This bike is for a 70 year old (not very fit "yet") lady so I would like it to be as safe and useful for her as possible. Thank you all very much!
October 22, 20214 yr As many have found out and you have also the cheap generic china branded stuff is pretty rubbish and lack any control, it is a speed controller. To have any real control one needs to spend more and buy a current control controller and lcd display with 5 PAS levels, KT are the best available ones on the open market. Lishui are another good brand but tend to be OEM only.

But she wanted to have a simpler LED display like her old ebike. Is there a KT controller that can be setup and then used with a simple LED display? Thank you for you help.
October 22, 20214 yr No one has to buy controller and display for compatibility, the Suntour though not as simple likely had nicer user control features. This KT with simple 3 led display and 8 pole disc is the one for the wife is she is wanting simplicity. Although it looks much the same, the controller is set up for current control or torque simualtion. Each 3 levels will give up to the max speed but each level has a different set current level so gentle in 1 to max in 3, it will give a nicer feel of control to her riding. 36V 48V 250W 350W 14A Kt E Bike Electrical Bicycle Conversion Kit Motor Controller with Kt LED 880 Display PAS Pedal Assistance|Electric Bicycle Accessories| - AliExpress Select the first option with bz4 PAS ring/disc.

That's great! Thank you very much! Would this one work too? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003137089612.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.3e9922dfr22zWy&algo_pvid=03c9f696-2afd-46d3-b4ad-058ec295c0d7&algo_exp_id=03c9f696-2afd-46d3-b4ad-058ec295c0d7-19&pdp_ext_f=%7B%22sku_id%22%3A%2212000024292136817%22%7D I like that it saves the current mode and it has 5 instead of 3. It appears to be the same controller?
October 22, 20214 yr Yes, the good thing with KT is one can use any of there displays. The 5 PAS levels I can tell you what you will get. PAS 1 will give a 13% of available controller max current. PAS 2 = 20%. PAS 3 = 33%. PAS 4 = 50%. PAS 5 = 100%. These aren't speed settings but current/amperage power delivery %'s. I mainly use PAS 1 only and I find gives enough boost if you also want a bit more of exercise, the others just make wafting along so much easier if you want an easier ride but are more noticeable in power deliver on inclines or long steeper ones. The acceleration is much more user friendly then the big shove in the back that the speed controllers give. I don't often use 3 -5 but if cycling out in Brighton area thye come in handy esp when I climb up to Ovingdean and the Amex stadium out of Brighton or up to Ditchling beacon from the North. October 22, 20214 yr Some of the higher PAS I use also at Hassocks as I make my way up to Jack and Jill, from there on a nice beautiful day I cycle to the WW1 'Chattri' Indian crem memorial, it is sat in the middle of know where on the downs and is a fitting peaceful place where their souls can rest.
October 23, 20214 yr Author I ordered a KT kit but it will take some time to arrive. In the meantime, I would like to investigate a bit why this system doesn’t work properly. The system works flawlessly with the throttle, but the issue I think is the way it reads the PAS sensor. Obviously something is wrong with the controller as I’ve tried three PAS sensors and all of them work backwards aswell, and the motor runs too fast, no mater the disk position, number of magnets or their orientation, etc… On the oscilloscope I can see a difference signals coming out of the PAS sensors when petaling backwards, but I can’t see any signals once the sensor is connected to the controller. I’m inclined to think that my controller filtering system of the signal is not working properly. Does anyone know if something can be done about it? Or maybe a way I can test my theory? Thank you!
