I need some help for my two years old Lafree brakes: a rear SRAM drum brake connected to the p5 gear and a front Rollerbrake. They are getting weak (the rear one is weaker and squeaks too). My local bike shop - who has no experience of such brakes - did regulate them and they are going better, but not completely. He says that probably the inner pliers (? I don’t know the right term) are consumed and that he can replace them if I find them. What do you think, is he right? And what should I buy exactly and where? Thanks for helping.

I have no experience of the SRAM drum brake Leonardo but I am fairly sure that the consumed or worn parts the dealer refers to are what in English are called the shoes (As in footwear!), of which there will be a pair. Hopefully knowing the English term will help you obtain replacements.

My experience of roller brakes is that they are almost completely maintenance free, only requiring the injection of a special high temperature roller brake grease at very infrequent intervals

Hello Leonardo

Shimano aren't listing the drum brake as such, only as a coaster brake, but the parts will be the same I'm sure. As Ian has said, the pads on the brake shoes are worn out, and they can be replaced as an assembly. On the first link below, scroll down to SG Internally Geared Hubs.

Then click on EV-SG-4C35-1855 and you'll get a pdf document. Go to item 2 on that and you'll see that it's the brake shoe assembly Y-330 98010

---------------------

For the front roller brake hub, as Ian has said, there's not much to go wrong, but spares are available, or the complete brake can easily be replaced as it sits on a standard ring of locating lugs on the hub.

If you use the link below, then scroll down to BR Brakes, you'll see choice of front roller brakes. One is marked for Japan so can be ignored, but click the pdf links on the others and see if you can identify your one visually. It may have a part number stamped on it corresponding to the pdf document number to help you.

There your dealer will see all the parts which are obtainable, or if desired, he could just order a new brake complete:

As you'll see there, the roller brake grease is also listed and might be enough to get it working better.

He'll need to order from the Shimano agent in Italy of course. I hope that helps to solve the problems for you.

P.S. Here's the Shimano Eu site in Italian.
