Finding my (electric) wheels

I have a Dillenger Opia 2 folding bike. It came with the controller and motor per photo and a 5 wire LED display model key-disp KD-26. In the hope that an LCD display might be compatible with the controller I have purchased a KT-LCD5 display. I've connected the display and tried a few things in situ (i.e. not taken the bike on the road). Lo and behold I have some problems.

The positives are:
  • LCD switches On/Off OK with no errors.
  • Throttle works
  • Motor kicks-in when turning the pedals
  • LCD backlight works but bike light does not come on
  • Battery voltage is correctly displayed numerically
  • Battery voltage is not displayed graphically UNLESS P5 in the paramter setting is set to 00
The negatives are:
  • Display backlight is illuminated when UP is kept pressed but front bike light does not come on and no voltage detetcted on the connecting wire using a mutimeter
  • When DOWN is pressed Walk Mode is not triggered
  • Speed etc is not displayed at all
  • Pressing UP/DOWN changes the PAS from 1 to 5 although I can not detect the actual effect as I have not taken the bike on the road.
I know there are the P and C parameter settings but don't really know if they could help. Should I now
  1. give up and buy a compatible KT controller. If so what and where from?
  2. play with P & C parameters. If so then what should they be?
  3. assume the display is faulty and return for refund?
  4. something else?
You can see that I am a novice and learning on the job :)

There's nothing wrong with the display. The problem is the communication between the display and the controller. All the functions that are working are independent of communication. They're both sending and receiving instructions, but one only speaks Welsh and the other only speaks Chinese, so they can't understand each other. The LCD-3 has extra functions that allows it to switch languages, so you get a better chance of a match, but still it can send an instruction that the controller can understand, but it won't have the wherewithal to do it, like I ask you to take off your hat, but you can't do it because you're not wearing one and don't have one to put on.

Basically, the LCD software needs to be matched to the controller's software. You should always buy them as a pair unless you know that they're compatible.

Most Bigstone LCDs will work with LiShui controllers as far as the important functions, but it's unlikely that all functions will work
Most KT LCDs only work with KT controllers, but not all functions are always compatible.
