Hi all,

Anyone have any recommended websites for Kenda 16" 2.125 tyres?

The only ones I found are on eBay for £43 each.

Thanks

Perhaps they can order them in?

I quite liked the idea of using Big Ben Plus, bought rims wide enough... but 1.75" (for which the old rims weren't suitable either) Marathon Plus work well enough for my needs on-road, which saves me from having to get wider mudguards.

I generally get Schwalbe tyres, others swear by Continental. Kenda tends to be for low end kit. They started off in Taiwan and now have factories across Asia. However, in terms of ride, puncture resistance and rolling resistance I think one of the German brands will be far better.

I don't think Kenda are low end as such. They are one of the two big bicycle tyre manufacturers with CST/Maxxis. These two big manufacturers make a huge number of other tyre brands. There is also Hung-A the big Korean manufacturer behind the Schwalbe brand.

Anyway Kenda make tyres for every price point pretty much. I don't think its surprising that someone finds Kenda tyres to be the best. I've certainly found them very good myself but I don't typically buy lightweight road bike tyres which maybe is a weaker area for them.

Schwalbe tyres have a partnership with Hung A, but they are not owned by them. Kenda are a big manufacturer, their tyres are better than unbranded or Chinese labels, but can their products compete in terms of performance with Conti or Schwalbe, I'm not convinced. Have a look here:

2 reviews for Kenda tyres:

The Kenda Small Block Eight gets outperformed by almost all other mountain bike tires that have been tested. When you compare this tire to a Schwalbe Racing Ralph Evolution, which is a tire in the same class, knob height and price. For a pair of tires, 23.4 watts of power output gets subtracted from the potential 200-250 watts of output an average cyclist can produce. In my opinion, this is a lot of lost speed, especially when you consider there is no puncture resistance or knob height advantage.

I can't recommend this tire to anyone, I will test more Kenda tires in the future to see if they can build tires that can beat the competition. Taking the Small Block Eight into consideration, Kenda definitely has a lot to improve.

The 120 TPI Kenda Juggernaut Pro is a fat bike tire with an extremely low weight. Unexpectedly, rolling resistance is extremely high and it's the reason I wouldn't touch this tire with a 10-foot pole. When compared to the Schwalbe Jumbo Jim LiteSkin (read review), at an air pressure of 8 psi, you'll lose close to 40 - 50 watts of power for a pair of tires. When you consider that the average cyclist can generate 250 watts, that's an insane amount of power lost in the tires.

I rate this tire 1 out of 5 based on my tests. I can't see a reason to fit these tires if they perform this bad in the tests, I give it the 1 point for its low weight. Check the overview page (overview) to see which tires I do recommend.

Me too. I've never used Continental but their Contacts are on the secondhand £72 Espresso I bought the other week from ebay, and they look almost unused... it'll take me awhile to try them out because I suspect I'm putting off renovating the thing because I've decided to keep it unelectrified, in order to actually get some actual exercise  to lower my blood pressure, which has increased. How have ebikes changed my life? Mine made me fat! o_O

Probably the case that if you hadn't started using the e-bike you'd be either even fatter or dead ;-)
I was already a couple of stones overweight, after I started using the ebike I gained another stone and three quarters... and it's been a long nightmare shedding about three stones by intermittent fasting and slow running over the past couple of years. I used to do much more walking. 3/4 stones to go. This is the only time in my life I have ever needed to diet to lose weight, previously circuit training (non-electrical) did the job. But I'm too old for that now, on the other hand a slimmer me may be capable still...

Swimming is the best thing to do as joints age to give a good workout. Running isn't a good idea as you age and also get heavier. I find swimming and using the e-bike keeps me a stable weight. You might want to look into what you are eating and why you are eating. Boredom can lead to over eating.

I've ordered my beloved Kenda tyres from AliExpress and will keep Continental and Schwalbe in mind for future reference, as I've heard many good things about them over the years too. Thanks everyone.

If you look at the history of Schwalbe tyres you will see reference to the fact they are an importer and rebrander of Hung-A tyres because at the time Korean products were not acceptable in the market but German engineering was well-perceived in Europe and the US. You can find near identical tyres to Schwalbe in Asia under the Hung-A brand and its other brands at much lower pricing. Many US and European tyre brands are just buying their tyres from big tyre manufacturers like Kenda, CST etc. Continental is a full on German tyre manufacturer with premium tyres manufactured in Germany and fully owns its own factories in places like India and China I believe. Personally I'm not loyal to any brand anyway I look at reviews. I had some Schwalbe CityJet Marathon tyres in the past and they were complete garbage, the sidewalls were just too thin and perished quickly. They were replaced with admittedly heavier Kenda tyres which were fantastic in comparison despite being considerably cheaper.

We tend towards trying to cling onto activities we're accustomed to. For me jogging has been replaced by lower impact slow jogging, but only when I'm feeling up to it. I managed 2.9 miles last week until chest pain occured:

Years of delicious and unhealthy free lunches and dinners with clients causing prolonged waistline expansion, which I simply stopped worrying about because I was so busy. Plus unfortunately, I'm a great cook. 3/4 stones to go! But I've been trying to shed this last bit of lard for months. I fear I may need to resort to doing actual exercise

My last small tyres were the 20" for the CF trailer , Tiger brand still working and no flats thanks to the Tannus inserts.

I wouldn't recommend all Schwalbe tyres. Some are brilliant, others are just awful. I bought some City Jet once, total crap. Poor puncture resistance, slick tread - but crap rolling resistance. Replaced them with Marathon Supremes, which did everything brilliantly. For some of their range I just don't understand why they bother making the stuff.
