When I return home from a few days away I cannot open the front door because of junk mail- I have decided to join the Daily Mail's campaign to collect it up ,cross out my address and write upon UNSOLICITED MAIL-RETURN TO SENDER and put the mail back in the post box. The Royal Mail until recently had a restriction of the number of items of junk mail they could deliver but the government have now scrapped this restriction so the quantity is unlimited- I don't want this mail and what a waste of trees.
They get your address from the government selling off your details from the electoral roll.
If you feel strongly against junk mail get your friends to do the same-the Royal Mail will get so overwhelmed they will have to rethink the system.

About 4 or 5 years ago, I started parcelling up some left over bricks from a building project and using the pre-paid envelopes from junk mail as address labels. I must have taken dozens of these to the post office and all were accepted, so hopefully someone had a big postage bill.

I've not tried it for a while (disposed of all my bricks) so I don't know if it still works.

Totally agree with you! It's one of my pet hates too, really annoys me. Especially since I have a sign on my door "no leaflets or occupier mail" and I've opted-out THREE times with Royal Mail at their freepost address, and still they deliver them. And all the pizza firms and "let us buy your own and rent it to you". Can't they read! I have have a letterbox cover lock and still they stuff them in.

I've signed to the Mailing Preference Service (MPS) which are supposed to prevent junk mail coming to you and you can complain when it does (freepost) and they can fine companies who persistently send it.

One company is particularly annoying, even though I've told them loads of times I don't want mail from them (both online and by returning it) still they send fortnightly mailings. But since they have a freepost address in it, I've started sending their mailings back using it, with additional "gifts" to bulk it out to packet rate ;)

Just don't pay council tax and they can't get your address from electoral register ;-)

Here's an idea.. roll the junk mailing up and put it inside a used cardboard toilet roll tube... automatically adds £1 to the postage cost if the company has a free post address.

Years ago when the child support agency started we all started sending stuff back to them, bricks old Kays catalogues etc, one guy managed to send a double mattress to Falkirk, we all we advised to stop sending bricks in case they built a third centre. Hence it cost them 10 million quid to collect less than 1.

Two versions of the register are made available, a full version used for electoral purposes and given to credit reference agencies and a shorter or 'edited' version made available more widely. People were given the right in October 2002 to opt out from appearing on the edited version - and if you want to limit junk mail you receive then it may be best to opt out in the future even if you did not do so then.

This isn't foolproof, but it does help to greatly reduce junk mail.

I must say that one thing (of the many things) I like about my move to Indochina is that there is no post at all (at least none has been delivered to me yet) - I suppose it might be an inconvenience at times but so far I haven't missed it at all - quite the contrary.
