Any readers considering purchasing one of these machines should be aware that Phylion are no longer manufacturing the 'in-frame' curved batteries fitted to the Enlightened models. This has been confirmed by Moore Large, importers of Izip machines. It has been suggested to an Izip owner here in Swindon, that a rack type battery will have to fitted. The owner is not too pleased about this solution, as the main reason for his choice was the battery hidden in the frame.

If the information I have been given is wrong, then at least one Izip owner here in Swindon would be delighted to hear about an alternative source for replacement batteries.

I should also mention, new Izip Enlightened models are currently being offered for sale on Ebay. Please be aware, replacement batteries may not be available for these machines in the future.

Regards
Bob

Hi Bob, check out the voltage and availability of the battery for the Sparta Ion M-Gear bike, Holland's biggest seller, which may use the same battery in it's frame. Dealer and picture below:

Ah!, that looks like a possible route. The Sparta uses a 24V NiMH array. I will pass on this information to the E-bike shop tasked with locating a new battery.

My thanks for your help Flecc, very much appreciated.

Seasons greetings to you.

Hi,

I'd be very interested to know if you manage to source a suitable battery.I've got an old Izip Trekking Enlightened that needs a new battery.

Hugh,

I haven't any news to pass to you just yet. Now that the holiday period is over I will start chasing this. I will be visiting the E-bike shop in Swindon on Saturday next. The Izip Trekking Enlightened is in use in many countries besides Britain, so I think it would be best to contact Phylion as to the future availability of these batteries. Rather than type it all up again, here is a copy of the Email I sent to the E-bike shop here in Swindon:

"Regarding a replacement battery for the Izip Trekking machine.

Hamant at Powered Bicycles in Nottingham is listing them at around £350 retail. There are two types, one is for Izip trekking fitted with NuVinci geared rear hub, the other is for Trekkings fitted with Derailleur gears. If my memory serves me correctly your customers Izip is the latter. It might be a good idea to 'phone Hamant in the new year to check this out.

If this solution should fail, there is another route that can be taken. The Sparta Ion GLS uses a curved 24v 10ah NiMh battery mounted inside the downtube. These batteries are very expensive at £540, add to this the correct charger for NiMh at £95. Sparta spares are sold by Electric Bikes Sales (ETS)

Electric Bike Sales - Shop Online for Electric Bikes, Electric Vehicles and Cycle Accessories - Batteries

As of January 1st, all prices will be plus 2.5% due to the VAT increase.

I have checked the Phylion website this morning. The curved battery is no longer shown on the product range, although it was listed just a few months ago.

Bob,

thanks - the Nottingham place looks promising. I could perhaps justify £350 there, but £650 or so for Sparta plus charger would be pushing it (literally :D ).

Cheers, Hugh

Izip Trekking Battery Replacement on Cycle to Work Scheme

Copy of email sent to Cycle to Work Scheme.

"Purchased a Izip Trekking via cycle to work scheme 18 months ago from the Atmospere Cycles Bulkington (Coventry) shop, the battery is now only giving 1.5 miles per charge. I have telephoned the Bulkington shop a number of times over the last few days alas no reply, I telephoned Bristol yesterday 7/12/11 and was surprised to be told that the battery is no longer available but Bulkington will be in contact with me after 4pm, need I say no phone call and today no answer from Bulkington, even Bristol is on voicemail !

Since this was purchased on the cycle to work scheme I have paid about £750 for a bike that is still not mine for 3 years under the new customs and excise ruling, it would appear I am left with a bike I cannot use, cannot part exchange and £750 out of pocket."

maybe the sales of goods act route through "consumer direct"

Consumer Direct contacts : Directgov - Directories

When you buy goods you enter into a contract with the seller of those goods. Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 goods must be:

as described
of satisfactory quality
fit for purpose

I think your bike fails on all 3 counts......

Also as the bike does not belong to you as bought under the cycle to work scheme you must have a claim against the current owner of the bike, your company?

Hi staffsfc

I am sorry you have had problems with your bike and I know that the Coventry shop is keen to check this out for you
Unfortunately Paul, that runs the shop, was rushed home with illness yesterday and has just struggled back into work this morning so may have missed your calls. He will call you this morning to arrange a suitable time to look at your bike
When you called the Bristol shop you went straight to voice-mail if it is before opening time or on the line to other customers
Indeed I have sent 2 emails to you this morning with no reply

Firstly we need to check your bike and see what the actual problem is - then we can report back to you and get things all sorted

Regards

Alistair
