"Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly
Was it something that you said?"
It has happened every year for the past 67 years to my personal knowledge. And yet it still takes me by surprise....the end of summer and the onset of autumn. The first clue this year came from my grandson. About the third week in August, he asked,"Grandad, is it getting dark earlier now?" Then, suddenly, the kids are back at school. There is a sharp nip in the air as you take your morning ride, and the grass is grey with heavy dew.
I have taken to wearing gloves some mornings, and vests have come out of summer storage. This morning, the baseball cap was replaced by the Russian style fur hat, although the earflaps will remain folded for a few weeks yet. The local section of National Cycle Route One is noticeably less used, even by dog walkers.
The leaves on the Horse Chestnut trees are starting to display their autumn colours, although most other trees are still green,. The fields of golden wheat have now been fully replaced by stubble fields, populated by straw bales awaiting collection, and the potato harvest is in full swing.
The first frosts are probably six weeks away. The sun still provides warmth in the afternoons. But make no mistake, winter comes on apace. So get out on the road, and enjoy these golden days of autumn to the full.
