I struggle to understand voltage and wattage so I need help.
I have a Wisper 705 with a 375 w battery and want to charge it from the cigarette lighter but I'm paranoid about putting in the wrong power and frying the battery.
I have a 5 volt, 500 mA inverter that plugs in to the lighter socket, would that work?

That is not an inverter, unless there is another socket on it. It is just a USB outlet that you can plug in to the cigarette lighter socket. An inverter will have a standard 3 pin plug socket on it.

What you want is possible, and not expensive, but before going any further could you post a picture of your Wisper charger label? It should say both input and output current and voltage, and this needs to be less than the maximum that the cigarette lighter socket can supply.

I have used a Sterling Power quasi sine wave 150W inverter with a 2 amp bike charger. A 3 amp charger will probably be fine, but 4 amp possibly not.

Mine cost only £15 in a sale a few years ago. A bit more now.

Oh, and I forgot to add: do not charge this way unless you are driving, or you will very quickly flatten your car/van battery.

You can do it with one of these if you add the connectors for the car and the battery. Don't forget to set the output voltage to 42.0 and the current to 2.0 amps before connecting to the battery:
