I'm a longtime rider of a Sunrunner ebike looking to repair or replace the 24V motor

My bike is rusty like the photos of some similar bikes on this site. I've owned it since 2008. I notice that people here can perhaps repair my motor. I've looked at various options but they all too costly. If my motor can be repaired that'll be the cheapest solution to getting the bike rideable again or at least with electric assistance. I'd have to ship it to the UK and have it shipped back again. That may cost a bit.

What's happened inside the motor is the planetary gear has broken with a bang. The electric part is still fine. The batteries shown in my photo are one new & one the original one. The old one has about half the capacity of the new one for shop riding the old one still does the job. For longer rides I use the new one.BikePic1.jpg

What do people think? What would an expert repairer think?

I had one of those for a short time about 5 years ago. I remember that it had some unusual things, like the light in the battery and the controller on the fork and maybe something else. I bought it as a non-runner and had to repair the battery. Anyway it is the same as any electric bike from that time so you can use any 36v motor with it but you will have to cut off the connector and join the wires to your controller. Can you do things like that?

I had an inkling some time ago but wasn't 100% sure but pretty well am now, nice to see your posts a little more often now and in the memory of your late pal & neighbour using his @ Saneagle avatar.
For others you may have to keep guessing who the poster actually is.

Anyhow I know you have had your health issues and it appears that you are over them now ?

I can't do modification work like you suggest, not enough time - too many other things to do! It may be too expensive to fit a motor different from the original because the spokes may not match - I'd have to get a matching rim. It seems the simplest thing is if the motor can be repaired internally or if that can't be done if there is a replacement motor someone might have somewhere in the world. I'm disappointed that Sunrunner has stopped all support for the bike. The spirit of built-in-obsolescence on their part?

Is the nature of most oem bikes older then 10 years of age when it comes to the electrical side.

I have one of these bikes. It has a 24v brushed motor and 2 stage planetary gears, IIRC the gears had 'pihsiang' moulded in to the gears so they are custom.

I converted mine to a standard 24v Li-ion because the batteries had leaked inside the box and destroyed the BMS

You could try the manufacturer and see if they have spare parts but the bike is old:

7 speed nexus hub, rear roller brake, dutch style stand, they are a neat bike!
