He wouldn't be the first experimental pilot to lose power. Half of the excitement, really - although test pilots tend to be phlegmatic, cautious types, a fair bit removed from the barnstormers and Chuck Yeagers of the world of the past, it's something they're prepared for, so in a way, no big deal.
If it gets too hairy, punch out.

My old VW Beetle had a handle which you turned to access a reserve gallon of petrol - maybe they need something analogous if electric planes are going to "take off".
