Hi Folks,

I'm new here! Names G from NYC.

Quick question, as I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere.

Is there such a thing as a "Square Wave" or "Sine Wave" hub motor?

I need a new controller for my Chinese un-identified rear hub motor, and I'm trying to figure out if I need to buy a sine-wave or square-wave... Are these terms only in reference to the controller, or do they need to be matched to the motor?

I have identified my controller is a KT clone variant, not sure if the controller is sine or square and it's blown so I need to buy a new one.... Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Motors are not sine or square but relate to the controller type, the latter being noisier.
Motors are desribed as sensored 8/9 wires ot unsensored 3 or 6 wires.
One can run both motor types on either controller, generally if motor is sensored then it makes sense to run it sine.

Thanks so much for the reply, I really appreciate it!

I just did my first controller swap and it worked...

If I could possibly trouble you (or anyone "in the know") for one last question?:

My original unit was KT compatible by vendor nadafreakingclue... The only difference is that the original controller had 6 wires for the hall sensor, and this new KT has 5 wires... The white wire is missing from the new controller.

I found out that white wire is going to a speed sensor in the motor...

From everything I've read & researched everyone says that the hall sensors provide essential speed information to the controller as it's needed for functionality of commuting the motor so you don't technically "need" a speed sensor...

However, I've have noticed interesting behavior with the speed sensor missing on the new setup: the display only provides the speed when the throttle is engaged.... My last controller showed a speed at all times throttle or not, peddling or not. Is that the expected behavior now that the speed sensor is not connected (has no where to connect to, to feed data), or is it possible I'm just missing a setting somewhere? Or maybe that speed sensor cable connects to one of the other hall wires that's already connected to a hall sensor? Any idea? I'm grasping... I can live without it, but it would be nice to have in a fully integrated sense like my old unit (IE. not interested in plugging in a separate display or gauge for speed, although I'm sure I could put something like that in place with minimal effort)...

Thanks again !

Best,
G

One can connect the White wire from the external speed sensor connector to the White motor hall wire. The gnd and 5v not needed as the they are both connected via a common rail/track in side the controller and are utilised inside the hub.
For speed reading P2 should be value 1 or one can try 6 if no joy.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, the controller has no white wire for the speed sensor... I thought this was supposed to be standard, but apparently not... I have 5 wires for the hall sensors instead of 6.. The white wire on the controller on the hall sensor is missing... Just wondering if that's normal

More specifically, here's the wiring diagram for my controller that's supposedly a "KT controller" but no KT I've ever seen has a big fat "NO" where the white wire is supposed to be on the hall sensor...

Has anyone else seen this?

For bikes using and LED the speed sensor isn't needed so could be a batch that are for this reason, this may also be backed up by there not being an alternative ext speed connection for wheel sensor.
