Hub Motor Repair - Advice appriciated!

Finding my (electric) wheels

Having eliminated various other avenues of possible problems with my old powabyke (controller and batteries are both working fine) I finally stopped prevaricating and opened up the hub motor and it turns out my original theory about something going wrong in the motor was correct.

The area around the brushes had lots of little bits of solder and blackened stuff around it, which combined with the large burn marks around the brushes make me think something has burned out :p
The marked wire has only a few strands of wire with the rest of it having come loose.

On the other side of the brushes (and connected to them) there are small lengths of what look and feel like string but have a slightly metallic look which were soldered into small holes next to them. Could anybody tell me what these are?

Is there anyway I can tell whether the brushes and/or motor itself are working ok and I can simply replace the wires and resolder the braid or if the whole thing needs replaced?

Cheers

I can't see any reson not to re-solder the wires. The rope/braid is normal for the brushes. It's because the brushes vibrate ans move a lot, so they use very fine braided copper wire which won't break with the vibration.

I see at the bottom of your photo there is a screw missing from the slot in the brush mounting plate if the mounting plate is loose it may add to your problems, are the braided wires still connected to the brushes? if not you may need new brushes unless you can come up with some sort of repair that will flex.
