250w front hub question

I can't get torque wrench on wheel nut because of the cable. How tight should nut be? 2 grunts I guess. Just nipped up at the moment.

Tight. They resist the motor's torque by frictioon, so the tighter the better, but you must'nt strip the thread.. I've never used a torque wrench. We engineeers just know when they're tight enough.

Yeah. one grunt two grunts ect. My mates dad never used torque wrench unless he had to as a plant fitter. He would go by grunts.

Good quality spanner and three grunts. That's three goes giving it enough to make you grunt.
4-5 grunts is risking damage.
Ok..

I'm with you on that score but I was suprised that on tightening my TSDZ2 cranks, they eventually worked loose.

After a couple of re-tightenings, no improvement so I bought a torque wrench to see how close my 'gut feeling' torque was near the 40nm required ------- 'twas way off - hmmm, must be loosing the knack - too long retired I guess?

Doesn't it depend how big the spanner is? For me just bending down to pick up the spanner is good for grunt number one.

It's all very well tightening them up super-tight, but some consideration needs to be made about whether you can undo the nuts out on the road if you need to remove the wheel to fix a puncture. I carry a small adjustable spanner, which is no good if the nuts have been tightened with a long spanner or torque wrench. I only use the small adjustable to tighten them for this reason, using my foot to push down for the final bit.
Now I accept that they may not be "tight enough" but I haven't had any problems, although I don't go jumping over logs or rocks and I don't pretend my name is Cavendish or Froome. This is one of the reasons I went with a rear hub motor. I wouldn't be so confident about it with a front hub.
The alternative is to carry a Gaadi double ended inner tube and a pen knife to cut off the punctured inner tube - something I might consider in future.

The torque to undo is always less than the torque to tighten them unless they get stuck from corrosion.

Well today I used my torque wrench for first time on low setting on the cantilever break bolt. Thought I'd get all clever and technical like the professionals do on YouTube. First one sheared off. O f bleep! I got the thread out forks easy which was lucky.
Spent the rest of the afternoon driving around the few bike shops open on a Sunday. No luck. Electric bike shops don't carry much in the way of spares and Halfords ordered one for me (£1.89) then I got a ready for collection text that was incorrect. Annoying. Think they have a pair of bolts coming in a couple off weeks, but I can't wait that long for them. Tbh I'm not convinced as warehouse showed one pack only...
Going to try calling a few bike shops tomorrow but I don't think I'll get much luck.
Guess it's eBay or wait for Halfords. Probably eBay..
Anyone want to buy a torque wrench. Used once. Ha
