How Much?

How much would you pay for one of these?

Go on have guess;)

It's an Annad electric road bike with a tiny rear 33v 250w Keyde motor and 9.3 Ah battery in the down tube.
I was shown it today and had a short ride. There is fault with the motor bearing and the UK importer doesn't want to know about despite it being almost new.

I was contacted directly via Pm by the importer, completely unsolicited , on 24/4/14 to offer me the demo he had of this bike. He sent me the spec but in spite of numerous requests he wouldn't tell me how much he was asking which make me wonder why he contacted me in the first place. In view of the above Iam very glad i didn't pursue the matter, although my sympathys are with the poor owner who bought it.

Dreadful device, I wouldn't part with any money for it.

When the Keyde motors first came out I thought they'd be ideal for a relatively lightweight (70 kg) rider like myself, whose only looking for moderate assistance.

Since then I've not read anything positive about them and our own D8veh tested one which broke after a few hours hard use.

Still it looks stealthy so I'd guess it'll cost around £2200

I was offered one like it for £2k.It was said to weigh 12.5 kg.

It is certainly lightweight although I don't know the actual figure and it is indeed stealthy, which was the owners main criteria.

I don't know the owner of the bike or the supplier, but I was told by a reliable 3rd party that it cost £4000.

You can buy them direct from Annad for a fraction of that price. The FOB price is $1799 =£1061.

If the owner want's it fixed, he/you can deal directly with Keyde for a replacement motor, but I wouldn't like to guess how long it would last. Maybe Keyde have an improved version. It's worth checking.

Hi Dave,

Can I just clarify, this bike has nothing to do with me, I was just shown it when I was visiting my wheel builder. I knew about the FOB price and have already passed on details of where to get a new motor, but if I were the owner I would be asking the supplier to sort it.

Yes, I know it's nothing to do with you, but I thought that perhaps you'd been asked to sort it out..

No I wouldn't get involved, it's a new bike and really between the owner and supplier.

I am more than happy to give help and advice on the brands that we cover.
e.g. a guy with a Mk1 eZee Forza from Somerset rang me this morning and asked if I could supply a new front tyre because he had a puncture.
Someone had told him he need to get one specifically for an eZee bike.

My advice was to try and repair it himself if he could, if not go to an LBS and if they don't want to do it try one of the electric bike shops in his area.

A correction to what I said previously, apparently the buyer did not pay £4000 for the bike, it was a demo bike and probably the one offered to other members for £2000, but apparently the intention is to retail for £4000.

I can't see many people going for it at that price, £2000 would be more realistic if the motor issues are resolved and good UK support is offered.

I don't think there is another bike like it on the market, so who would pay £2000 for one?

It's very similar to the Cytronex bikes around £2000 except even more discrete, as the batteries are hidden in the down tube.

If the reliability was sound I reckon they'd sell well around that price.

Here's the kit version : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251603342833

The only reviews I've found on it are very negative, otherwise I'd be giving it a try myself.

A bit more info on our Keyde kit The first sample broke completely probably the same as above, but the second one is still going, although with problems. Originally, it worked well, but very soon after we got it, the pedal assist changed to only operate after about 5 rotations of the crank, and runs on for about 2 seconds after stopping pedalling with no way of stopping it. The motor has reasonable torque, but if you use the torque, the motor warms up causing the temperature sensor to cut the power right down until it cools down again. I guess this problem would effect everyone, so I'd say that this motor is only for light-weight people.

Annad....a nightmare of a company to do business with, they only seem interested in direct one off sales to customers,i couldnt get any discussions with them going....they appear to have one price and thats it.
As I was trying to spend money with them and they were completely disinterested I just cannot conceive what they would be like for after sales service.
The reports on the bikes sold in Australia were not good and with the foregoing I decided that they would not be a good company to deal with.
I picked up their brochure at the Shanghai show, their prices were about £1300 to £2000.
Shame really,if that Keyde motor was reliable it would be nice to produce a lightweight bike but is their a big market for such a bike-my feedback is that lightweight sports style road bikes with electric would be a very small market-interesting how Freego get on with their new lightweight, short range bike?

I like the FreeGo design. There is very little that can go wrong with it. A bit like the Momentum really.
Two small bottles, who else has thought of that?
Every time I see a bike with one of those water bottle batteries, I can't stop the urge to give it a little wobble test. If it wobbles any more than a panacotta, then it's going to kill the electrics soon enough.
If you look at a German made bike, the downtube has a flat section to mount the bottle. On a Chinese bike, the downtube doesn't. The guy who mounts this bottle needs sacking.
