My rear tyre looks like it has warn down to the lighter, inner rubber. How much life can i expect from now or is as welll to change immediatly. Its done approx 6100 miles and the rest of the tyre is perfect..Can i expect to get a couple of hundred miles or not ?

I'd say you could; but just be prepared for an increased likelihood of punctures. It's not like a high-speed blowout on the motorway, really.

Hi Carperbagger

I can guarantee that if you can stop eating a big fry up before jumping on your bike, surely you will gain a few more miles before reaching the tyre rim;)

The way I look at it is that is the cost of a tyre worth your getting injured? But I do ride in a very hilly environment.

Interesting question.. since tyres are fairly cheap and probably the first thing to fail on a bike (and have the highest risk of accident/disruption to travel) I'd be inclined to change mine if they were showing significant signs of wear, or just already well worn if buying a used bike...

What happens to all the discarded tyres, do they just go into landfill or can they be recycled?

It will last quite a while longer, but the rate of wear of that under-layer is usually much faster, due to it being a much softer grade of rubber. It's function during construction is bonding.
