How much cash do I need to outlay to gain an extra 2 mph ?

Hi forumgoers,

You all know that I am stuck at 15mph on my ebike for my commute.

All I am after is an extra couple of mph from my bike, I'm not asking for the world, but if I could just go 2 mph quicker on my commute I'd be happy

I mean I used to average 18 mph on my road bike

So is there anyway of squeezing out an extra 2 - 3 mph from the rear hub drive on my Pure flux one ?

I have the cash to spend for the improvement

The only practical way on a hub motor bike is to up the voltage which increases the assist speed pro rata, In your case changing the 36 volt battery for a 48 volt one would increase the assist speed to up to 20 mph.

But of course you have the wrong bike for that since it has a frame integrated battery, not readily substitutable. You'd also need to check if the controller could accept the higher voltage, though it probably would take that small increase.

I have seen for sale in Europe a 48 volt battery that is basically a straight swap for the one I have , failing that it comes with a mount and fitting kit that I could maybe swap over ? The holder is screwed into the bottle cage bosses on the frame down tube, as is mine.

Not quite as difficult as I thought then. You need to get access to the controller wherever that is, probably next to the battery, to check the voltage ratings of its electrolytic capacitors. They need headroom over the 48 volts, a 50 volt rating too low, 63 volt ok.

Yeah good idea, I'll swap the tyres out with some I have kicking around the garage.

Luckily my commute is all smooth flat tarmac

It's the controller that limits the speed to 15.5mph. Most motors are capable of giving a few mph more if you de-restrict the controller. Usually you can do that by accessing the programme settings (often simply holding down the up and down keys on your display for a few seconds) and changing the speed limit setting. It's not clear what display/controller your ebike is using: Increasingly it seems makers are disabling that ability, but it's worth having a fiddle to see.

So I guess that this is the 'controller' ? Its mounted on the left of the bars next to the brake lever clamp. It has an on/off button the top, and a rocker switch below to select modes. I'll attach a couple more photos.

No, that's the display that talks to the controller. It will be in the frame somewhere, possibly at the base of the battery.

Your display is a Kingmeter acording to Purebike. As Cyclebuddy pointed out, it may be restricting the controller and have a mode allowing a bit more speed, I'm not familiar with the Kingmeter so you need someone who knows what it might allow.

That's the display that talks to the controller. As said, holding the buttons down on your display gives you access to the program menu. Option 3 adjusts maximum speed. The trouble is you then need the 4-digit passcode to change the setting (as many of these menus do). You could try 1111, 2222, 3333 up to 9999, but it's anybodys guess what that passcode could be.

My old king meter display allowed speed change, though had no set pass code.
