How many miles have you done overall?

I've been riding an electric bike (well two actually) for the past 18 months. My first bike, a MTB style electric bike I used from late spring last year until the summer this year. In that time I covered approx 5,000 miles. Since getting the Torq i've added another 1,500 miles onto that.

The only thing that has gone wrong was a puncture on the first day commuting to work!

I'm not sure as my CatsEye thingy stops working. I've been unlucky, I've had the following problems so far:

1. Spoke broke on front wheel on two separate occasions
2. Rear wheel has had two punctures
3. Twist grip spring is broken
4. Speedometer works for a while and then stops
5. Motor doesn't always start when I try to accelerate

And I've only had it for three months. :(

My mileage has tended to decline a little for various reasons, but I've done just over 6500 miles on my three electrics. The previous twelve years often saw much higher mileages on normal bikes with 5300 in a year as the highest.

On Arons bike faults, I've already given him my thoughts on the spokes, twistgrip, and slow motor reaction. I used to get loads of punctures on my Giant Lafree Light but stopped that permanently with Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. They do a 700c fairly fat one suitable for the Torq, they're pricey though. Fisher Leisure are the wholesalers your bike dealer can get them from.

The Cateye Velo 5 speedo is quite demanding about the sensor position, the alignment of your's could be the problem. The instruction sheet on that which came with the bike has an illustration of exactly where the sensor rod and magnet should meet, so if you adjust either the spoke magnet or wriggle the sensor rod tiewraps along to match that, it should be ok.

I'll second the Marathon Plus tyres. I've done all my miles on them and never had a puncture (tempts fate )

I don't have an exact figure as I either lose the cateye or reset when I try and change the wheel size. I suppose about 3500 on a Torq since July 06.

So far...
Too many punctures to mention until I went over to the Marathon Plus.
One battery replaced after six months.
Went back to 50 cycles to sort out a cutting out problem when going over bumps (loose wire on a battery terminal)
One new chain.
Numerous front brakes sets but the hydraulic magura replacements are lasting very well so far.
Replacement mudguards as the original front support broke with metal fatigue.
One gear cable.

I think I remember you expressing a desire for fitness when you bought the bike John, and you must be well on the way with that mileage rate! :)

:D Flecc - its the healthiest I have felt in a good few years. Weight going down, about 1 - 2lbs a week despite eating and drinking as much of anything I like. Pulse dropped, blood pressure better, losing inches and toning up; and I dont even have to pay gym fees :D

Im so glad I found this forum....

Great to hear John, it's how I keep my weight from racing away. Well done. :)

I'm only at about 3500 miles (estimated) in 4 years.

Although, I had to replace the whole rear wheel when someone unkindly slammed it while it was parked in a bike rack, I'm just now replacing one of the original Giant tires.

I had Slime put in and thicker tubes when I purchased the bike. Whatever, the case, I've had pretty good luck with not having too many flats. I think I've only put two patches total in all 4 years.

Actually, the biggest problem I've had is having to replace the valves because of not leaving it sit up with the tire valve lateral to the ground, and since Slime fills holes with fiber, it also is good about ruining the valve when trying to put air in the tires.
