My home and contents insurance is due for renewal soon and want to get cover for my electric bikes. I will of course try Moneysupermarket.com etc., but in the meantime, can anyone can recommend a good policy?

Hey John,
I went through this a few months ago and found that Esure was very cheap and the bike cost only an additional £40 . I found some very decent customer reviews and feedback too. However, in the end, my wife wanted to go with our existing insurer Nationwide, so that's what we did, at considerably more expense...( two words "wears" and "trousers") . ..But when it comes around next time, I would hope to switch.

Funnily enough, I decided to insure my bike on our Nationwide policy, but found that I had to take out a new policy, as ours was nearly 30 years old, and no longer a current "product".
So I swapped to a new policy which included my ebike and two ordinary ones, and found that I was paying more than £10 per month less!

It depends what cover you want.

You can quite often add an e-bike to a normal household policy. There is usually a value over which cycles have to be declared, so its best to declare it, and there may well be a small extra charge.

This will give you cover against theft, and odd things like the boiler blowing up and melting it, or dropping the bike out of an upstairs window onto the postman.

What it may not give you is liability cover when riding it off your premises.

Halifax insurance told me they don't cover e-bikes because it has a motor on it. The were not willing the discuss the classification system of an e-bike.

I'd be careful and make sure the policy wording actually says e-bike or get it in writing if you do want it on a household policy ;)

Same problem with our insurer too. And it's not that easy to find alternative policies for Park Homes either.

I am with NU (AVIVA), they put it on the house insurance for £6 !!

The chap spoke to on the phone had to go off to the underwriter to get confirmation and kept wanting to know how big the engine was, once I had convinced him it was 200W he was OK.
