If by recommissioning you mean the battery, the one maybe needing a new one.

control area network is what it stands for and each company can encrypt it so no one can recell the batts and force you to buy there brand only.

a company in germany can do it but expensive burt they dont do the giant branded batts.

So my options are limited? Can an aftermarket battery be encouraged to work?

no because the batt motor and display all talk to each other via can bus every 30 micro seconds the batt wont even turn on unless it sees a compatible motor and display.

giant use the yamaha motor but make there own batts controllers and displays where a normal yamaha bike uses uart programming tho while it is encrypted there is a 3rd party chip you can use so a normal bms will work on the bike with it between the batt and motor.

i have never seen a giant batt for sale but i bet there not cheap!

you can buy the normal yamaha controllers tho for 200 quid but have no idea if it would fit in the giant yamaha motors but you would then need a new display and get the batt you have recelled so would fit back on the bike so might not work and could cost even more.

no problem i hope it was cheap because if that controller inside the motor is dead and a standard controller wont fit the motor is a bin job im afraid.

shimano got the extra mile tho and use antitamper sensors that will brick the motors if it detects if the motor casing has been removed even after warranty ends and a new e8000 motors is £1000.

Quick update on this. Took bike to my local giant dealer. He tells me he has all the giant diagnostic equipment but can't connect to the bike as there is no power. Wont commit to battery or charger fault as can't test either. Surely the charger can be tested using a meter? Can anyone advise? The charger cable has 5 connections on it. I have access to a multimeter but no idea how to use it.

Hi Henry,
This may be more bad news I'm afraid.
A charger only really needs two terminals, +ve & -Ve. The fact that yours has 5 probably means more of this canbus buggery.
The charger needs to handshake with either the battery bms (battery management system) or the contrller. Until it does this there will be no output voltage, so can't be measured.
I think these systems are outrageous as even the 'expert' dealers can do nothing with them - let alone self repair by owners.
It is possible that the battery has gone into sleep mode - some do. May be worth searching with this question, not sure.

This is why, so called, cheap and nasty hub drive bikes are great for the garden shed mechanic. Mostly parts are generic, repairable/replaceable and able to be owner worked on. It's what this forum does best.

Yes the giant uses it own CANbus system, they are anti social user devices with short shelf lifes once they go wrong and costly out of warranty.
