Pedelec newbie here.

The recently bought e-bike is a 5 year old Gepida Reptila 1000 which I am using to get around the 'smoother' tracks in the forest of dean (FOD). The battery is 1 year old. Unfortunately Gepida have announced a last time buy on these. Is this normal practice for electric bikes?

Don't worry, when a battery becomes deficient it can be recelled rather than replaced.
